Melendez vs Henderson- I have gone back and forth on this one. History doesn't look good for Gil. We have already seen Nick, Nate and Jake fail in their title fights and Gil is the last hope for that camp. I don't know the overall record but when the UFC Champion is attempting to unify a title they usually get the job done. Not only that it will be almost exactly 11 months since Gil's last fight. While on the flip side Bendo is coming off a dominating win... |

Anderson Silva vs. Stephan BonnarA squash match. This is without a doubt what this amounts to in a world where Anderson Silva is the best fighter on the planet today and possibly best of all time thusfar in the sport. He has the opportunity this saturday to do what nobody else has ever been able to do in the cage, knock out or submit Stephan Bonnar. For a guy who fights the way Bonnar does and how long he's been fighting in the UFC's... |
Jon Jones vs Vitor BelfortAfter the debacle surrounding the now defunct and scrapped event that would have been UFC 151 we witnessed a shuffle in real time concerning Jon Jones' next defense of the light heavyweight championship, and this is where the wheel landed. It all started eight days before what would have been 151 when Dan Henderson was forced to withdraw due to a torn MCL, Lyoto Machida could not be reached as he was travelling, and thus Chael Sonnen... |
Benson Henderson vs Frankie Edgar In February Benson Henderson and Frankie Edgar fought in Japan. In a competitive contest "Bendo" took a five round decision to win the lightweight title. Yet again we have Frankie Edgar involved in a rematch for the lightweight title. Over the last two and a half years the lightweight title has been effectively hijacked with three straight rematches between Frankie Edgar fighting BJ Penn twice in a row, Gray Maynard... |
Urijah Faber vs Renan BaraoWhen news that Dominick Cruz suffered a torn ACL, and would be forced to withdraw from his rubber match with Urijah Faber, fans were upset. However as far as it goes this is a worthy consolation prize. Since dropping to 135lbs Urijah Faber has looked fantastic in his dominating performances over Takeya Mizugaki, Eddie Wineland, and Brian Bowles. Since Cruz took the 135lb belt nobody has looked better against him than... |
Demetrious Johnson vs Ian McCallA rematch of the highly controversial fight in Australia from earlier this year. At the beginning of the inaugural UFC flyweight tournament both Ian "Uncle Creepy" McCall and Demetrious "Mighty Mouse" Johnson were required to sign an agreement to a fourth round in the event of a draw in order to prevent holding up the tournament. The first time these two fought it was a very evenly contested fight overall, with Ian McCall... |
Junior dos Santos vs. Frank MirOriginally these two were slated to fight different opponents on this card, however one failed drug test changed everything. Junior Dos Santos was supposed to be fighting Alistair Overeem for the title until he dutchman pissed hot for highly elevated levels of testosterone and an impossible story to go with it. Frank Mir was supposed to fight Cain Velasquez in order to help Cain vault himself back into the title picture for a hopeful... |
Nate Diaz vs Jim Miller A chance at a title shot has long eluded Jim Miller, who at one time was recognized as a top three lightweight when he was amassing a seven fight win streak after losing to Gray Maynard in early 2009. He hit a setback when current champion Benson Henderson soundly defeated him last year. After the loss Miller rallied in his next fight to finish Melvin Guillard after some close calls early. Nate Diaz took a short lived hiatus from the lightweight... |
Jon Jones vs Rashad EvansProbably the most anticipated fight of the year thusfar, at least in terms of the real bad blood factor. Rashad Evans and Jon Jones were teammates at Jacksons MMA once upon a time, and were both steadfast in refusing to ever fight one another. One day someone got into Jon's ear and convinced him to say otherwise. This caused a huge rift between Rashad and Jon, as well as between Rashad and Greg Jackson, which collectively led to... |
Alexander Gustafsson vs Thiago Silva In his first fight back from a suspension due to submitting a fake urine sample against Brandon Vera, Thiago Silva has his work cut out for him. Alexander Gustafsson is a prospect who is quickly gaining a name for himself in the light heavyweight division. These two are both primarily strikers but they have opposing styles. Gustafsson is known for controlling distance and using his reach to throw accurate but... |
Frankie Edgar vs Benson HendersonFrankie Edgar has had only two opponents in four fights since december of 2009, having back to back immediate rematches with BJ Penn and Gray Maynard. While he's been busy with that Benson Henderson has amassed a 5-1 record in which his only loss was a very close decision against Anthony Pettis. Though nobody besides Frankie himself has looked as impressive as "Bendo" in the last year. Posting decisive and clear victories... |
Nick Diaz vs Carlos ConditOn paper this looks like an early candidate for fight of the year. Simply put these two bring it every fight. A couple of well rounded fighters who know how to finish will be fighting for the interim welterweight title in GSP's absence due to injury. In his last fight Nick Diaz did to BJ Penn's face what no other fighter in three weight classes has ever been able to do before. Carlos Condit made short work of his last opponent, Dong Hyun Kim, when he knocked the Korean... |
Rashad Evans vs Phil DavisNot effected by the Munoz shuffle, but by it's own set of circumstances instead. Rashad Evans and Phil Davis were supposed to fight each other late last year but the bout had to be moved when Davis suffered an injury. He was replaced by Tito Ortiz, who was soundly dominated by Evans enroute to a TKO loss. Now that Davis is healthy again the bout is back on. Standing I give the advantage to Evans in technique and... |
Jim Miller vs Melvin GuillardWith both former title contenders coming off one sided losses it only made sense to match Jim Miller up with Melvin Guillard if for nothing else than the entertainment factor. Jim Miller went on a ten fight tear before being dominated by Benson Henderson, but to be fair had it been anyone else Miller probably would have snagged one of those submissions. Guillard on the other hand came out too full of himself... |
Jose Aldo vs Chad MendesIn possibly his last fight at Featherweight before he has effectively cleared the division out Jose Aldo will defend his championship against Chad Mendes. While often criticized for his less than exciting style Chad Mendes has been on an absolute tear since entering the sport in August of 2008. A perfect 11-0 record for Mendes and a strong wrestling base combined with undeniable toughness has him looking, at least on paper,... |
Brock Lesnar vs Alistair OvereemIn a fight to determine the number one contender for Champion Junior Dos Santos' first title defense Brock Lesnar takes on Alistair Overeem. A classic style matchup involving the wrestler and european kickboxer seems to amplify interest since both men are among the largest heavyweights in the sport. Lesnar is making his first attempt to bounce back from a second bout with diverticulitis following his loss to Cain Velasquez last... |
Jon Jones vs. Lyoto MachidaQuite possibly the single best year for any fighter in the history of the sport to date. Jon Jones has a chance to do something that rivals and in my opinion tops Shogun's legendary run in 2005 winning the PRIDE Grand Prix. If Jones can beat Machida he'll have won four fights this year, two of which over surefire hall of fame fighters in Rampage Jackson and Shogun Rua, as well as over a possible hall of fame fighter in Lyoto Machida.... |
Dan Henderson vs. Mauricio RuaA fantasy matchup that never happened in the famed PRIDE organization. Dan Henderson was the last man to hold the PRIDE Middleweight championship which equates to the light heavyweight division stateside. Mauricio "Shogun" Rua had possibly the most spectacular year in the history of the division back in 2005 when he tore through Quinton Rampage Jackson, Alistair Overeem, Antonio Rogerio Minotoro Nogueira, and Ricardo Arona to not only win... |
B.J. Penn vs Nick DiazA fantasy fight many fans have been posing for years now. Easily the more talented Diaz brother, Nick has spent the last several years out of the UFC between DREAM and Strikeforce. Now he has been brought back over to challenge reigning champion Georges St Pierre. Only when the fight was set Nick went off the reservation for a short while, missing at least two pressers for the fight and being unreachable by even his brother and team from Camp Cesar... |
Gray Maynard vs. Frankie EdgarEasily the most anticipated rematch of the year. Gray Maynard and Frankie Edgar will lock horns for the second time this year and the third time overall. The second fight, which was held on January first, is still a favored candidate for fight of the year. From the first round near knockout in which Maynard to the amazing comeback Edgar had for the duration of the fight only to have it end in a draw. They were set to meet earlier... |
Dominick Cruz vs. Demetrious JohnsonIn his latest challenge for the bantamweight title Dominick Cruz finds Demetrious "Mighty Mouse" Johnson ready to vy for the top spot in the division. However in many ways Johnson represents much the same attributes as the last contender, Urijah Faber, did. The only major differences between them are Mouse's speed, as well as being much shorter with less reach. This has all the makings of a great fight, but something tells Me... |
Jon Jones vs Quinton JacksonIn his first defense of the Light Heavyweight title Jon Jones will square off against perennial top ranked light heavyweight Quinton "Rampage" Jackson. What Jones lacks in experience he makes up for with sheer freak athleticism and talent. Jackson has pretty much seen it all. He's fought Sakuraba, Wanderlei Silva, Shogun Rua, Ninja Rua, Igor Vovchanchin, Chuck Liddell, Dan Henderson, Forrest Griffin, and Rashad Evans.... |
Jake Shields vs. Jake EllenbergerThis fight seems similar to most every fight Jake Shields has. He is outmatched striking but at an advantage in overall grappling. His unique mix of high level wrestling and very high level jiu jitsu make him a handful for anyone on the ground. His takedowns are deceptively strong and he is the kind of fighter who will chain takedowns without a second thought if the first one doesn't work. His only goal is to get... |
Sometimes I think an idea or meme circulates the MMA blogsphere that begins to have a life of it's own independent of the evidence supporting it. The idea Lesnar was immune to punches, wrestling and submissions due to his muscles being one of them. The idea the UFC isn't mainstream, or could never be mainstream is another.
The recent days and weeks have seen a lot of chatter about the impending demise of Strikeforce, but a critical look at what an immediate end to the promotion would mean to Zuffa can only lead one to believe that Strikeforce, while clearly restructured and... |
Anderson Silva vs. Yushin OkamiLudo: With a chance to avenge his only loss since 2004 Anderson Silva will rematch Yushin Okami. This time many things are on the line. Anderson Silva's win streak, title defense streak, and spot as the pound for pound best fighter on the planet among them. For Okami this isn't just a title shot, this is a chance to prove that Japanese MMA isn't dead, that asian fighters can contend with the best... |
Rashad Evans vs. Tito OrtizLudo: A rematch from years ago. Way back at UFC 73 these two locked horns in what turned out to be a great fight ending on a sour note. Ortiz was deducted a point for grabbing the fence resulting in unanimous 28-28 scores for a draw. However this fight may not look the same as that one did. Rashad at that time was still very much an up and coming fighter who had just started developing an overall game. Tito, meanwhile,... |
Dominick Cruz vs. Urijah FaberLudo: A rematch from some years ago that has turned into a bitter rivalry all over the media. Urijah Faber and Dominick Cruz have exchanged jabs at one another for the last four years after Faber handed Cruz his first and only professional loss. Needless to say when 'the California Kid' moved down into the Bantamweight division the calls for a rematch with the belt on the line started coming... |
Nate Marquardt vs. Rick StoryLudo: Fresh off the domination of Thiago Alves Rick Story steps in for Anthony Johnson to face Nate Marquardt. Making his debut at Welterweight, Marquardt looks to get a fresh start in a new division in which he hopes to impliment his skillset and an added size advantage. Rick Story looks to make another step toward title contention with a win that will send Marquardt back to 185. Marquardt brings a diverse... |
Shane Carwin vs. Junior dos SantosLudo: Your looking at knockout of the night here. It is almost garaunteed that this fight doesn't see the end of three rounds. With Junior dos Santos and Shane Carwin being two of the premier strikers in the heavyweight division this fight will be fireworks. Both pack some of the best power in the division, they also love to stand and bang. Two differences between these fighters are age and... |
Quinton Jackson vs. Matt HamillLudo: What was supposed to be the co-main event of the night has been promoted after the untimely retraction of both Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard due to injuries. Never the less this should prove a decent fight. Rampage looked less than prepared against Rashad Evans, yet at least in better shape for his fight with Lyoto Machida while Hamill has marked two victories in the meantime following... |
We have all seen it, a fighter that for whatever reason (rushed, mismatched, mismanaged, hurt, combination) are clearly not on the same level as the champion and leave some of us wondering what the challenger was even doing in the ring or cage int he first place. I want to make it clear I am not talking about squash fights that we all saw coming a mile away, like last weekends Pacquiao vs Mosley or Anderson Silva vs Damian Maia, these were fights that we all thought would be competetive and some even thought the title could change hands. Here are some fights that come to mind when thinking... |
Georges St. Pierre vs. Jake ShieldsLudo: Some have called this a compelling matchup. However it's far more likely that Jake Shields is going to end up just like the last few opponents GSP has had. He will be touted as the one to finally take the throne before the match by a select few and after it's all said and done we will be admitting to ourselves and everyone else once again that Jake Shields didn't belong in the same cage as "Rush".... |
