Also, swimmers are still the same size now as they were 30 years ago yet their records get beat every year. Rocky Marciano would be a midget compared to Lewis, Vitali and Wlad.
The number of errors here is remarkable.
1. Training has NOT changed. If it has? Tell me how? 2. No grueling training camps? LOL, read up on Jim Jeffries or William Muldoon sometime. 3. Swimmers are the same size??? Really? Mark Spitz was 6 feet tall and weighed 170 pounds. Rowdy Gaines was 6'1 and 175 and Aussie champion Micahel Wenden was 6' tall while Aussie great Murray Rose was 6'1 175. Nowadays? Alexander Popov is 6'7" and 200 pounds, Ian Thorpe is 6'5 and 230 and Michael Phelps is 6'4 and 200 pounds and Grant Hackett is 6'6 and 210.
You're in luck. We are giving a free fourth incorrect assertion with three previous incorrect assertions. Today only! First, Thorpe has been retired for over 3 years. Next, you named a few swimmers not the majority. Also, you stated boxers fought about every month. training camps last longer than a month so back in the day they wouldn't have had proper training camps. 1. The swimmers I named were ALL top of the heap guys. An apples to apples comparison. You on the other hand have named NOBODY! 2. Again, look up men like Jim Jeffries and Jack Dempsey and William Muldoon etc about training camps. Do some actual work rather than making unsupported assertions.. 3. Let me make an analogy. 40 years ago NFL training camps were often 7-8 week affairs and they were FAR more brutal and draining affairs than camps today. Camps today are 2-3 weeks shorter and far less draining. Care to guess why that is so? BECAUSE THE MEN 40 YEARS AGO WERE NOT ALREADY IN SHAPE WHEN THEY ARRIVED IN CAMP! Camp had to be that long because so much basic fitness work had to be done. IT WAS A REMEDIAL PROCESS NOT AN OPTIMAL ONE! if there is one thing that is clearly true it is that STAYING in shape takes less time and work than GETTING in shape. The men who fought monthly didn't need to go away to camp. Why? BECAUSE THEY WERE ALWAYS IN FIGHTING CONDITION! Or would you like to argue that someone like say Young Corbett III, who in 1927 alone fought 15 times and a total of 126 rounds did so while in less than optimal condition? Just so you know 126 rounds is 27 more than David Haye has fought in his whole career.

No clue huh? Let me make it even simpler then. STAYING in shape takes far less work than GETTING in shape. Long training camps with long breaks of inactivity is NOT the optimal way for ANY athlete to train. It happens because men fall out of shape due to inactivity. STAYING in shape takes far, far less work. If you thought the reverse was true then you'd have to explain why (for example) athletes don't simply go inactive between the Olympics and then go into long training camps and not compete except at the Olympics.

| Good points Marble. The reason there is such a plethora of injuries lately in camp is due to the fact these guys are constantly in work-out mode and are not allowing their bodies to heal properly. | |

Aussies don't care about the NFL that's why. Athletes don't go inactive between the olympics because they wouldn't make money not for any other reason. |

Well if your fighting 20 fights a year how can your body heal properly? |

[rolling eyes] Athletes don't go inactive because it is nearly impossible to stay in top competition shape and to get better without actually competing. If your theory were correct? Then football, baseball and hockey and basketball teams would be at there very best coming out of training camp instead of at mid-season. But that is simply not the way things work. If your theory were correct then boxing is the one human endeavor in which doing it LESS makes one more proficient. You really want to make that argument? Do yourself a favor. Go read Ray Robinson's autobiography.

Yup. There is a 100% injury rate in the NFL. Except for backup QB's and kickers? EVERY player is injured in some way ALL the time.
