I don't expect BJ to go for any surprise take downs. I'm sure both fighters will be content to stand and bang this one out. Both fighters have good chins and good boxing. Nick has the cardio, BJ will have the speed. It is an interesting matchup for sure. I'll be shocked if either fighter is submitted.

| I would be willing to bet a sig that neither gets submitted. BJ may have a slight edge in grappling but it's from a positional standpoint, both have stellar submission games. | |

Even if I wanted to pretend Nick had the better BJJ, you can't submit a Gracie Black Belt that is made out of rubber. Maybe Paul Harris has the power to snap one of BJ's rubber bands, but Nick doesn't. A submission here would be the most surprising result possible.

| The only way there is a sub is if someone gets dropped and then choked out. | |

Even then. I don't think you can drop one of these guys so bad they aren't coherent enough to at least defend on the ground. That shit is ingrained in their instincts by now.

| If BJ doesn't finish him in the 1st, 29-28 Penn, and I bet he'll land a takedown or two to score points or take control of a rd. I know some might think, Nick off his back....but I think BJ could handle Nick and control him well from top pos. | |

a little late to the party...but this is true. Not only do they train together...You can actually tell that Edgar's style and footwork is actually similar if not identical to Alvarez. Now Alvarez has a little more power and is more agressive with his strikes but would not be surprised if Edgar's improved striking has a lot to do with sparring with guys like EA. I can understand that he has not beat the best guys in the world, though nobody has put the beatdown on Roger Huerta like Alvarez did. Huerta was always a narrow defeat..the only time in his career he looked below average was when he fought Alvarez and most of the guys Alvarez beat have been good guys and he's been dominant. There should be little doubt Alvarez has all the skill in the world to be the best LW..he's just not in the right org. Nothing against Bellator but they are building up prospects with their tournaments and feeding these inexperienced prospects to established studs like Alvarez and Lombard.

| I don't know how the Bellator contracts work. Are fighters like Alvarez and Lombard allowed to leave if offered a contract by the UFC? |

| Askren has one fight left and can leave I believe, I'll look at that and say Eddie could as well, he has some idea to build his brand outside the UFC first, if he's making good money more power to him, but that strategy doesn't work when you can't consistently fight the top names, although Aoki does work if he beats him. | |

| No, because they would have likely been signed by the UFC a long time ago if that was the case. If the guys become available, the UFC will snatch them up...there is no on the fence with guys like Alvarez and Lombard...or Askren...probably Warren and Konrad as wel as a few non champions in few of the divisions. The UFC would look to get those guys in a heartbeat. | |

| Their contracts aren't up yet....I remember Askren saying semi recently he has one fight left (Heiron) and then he'll decide what he does.

| Thanks guys, I hope we see them in the UFC soon or at least Strikeforce. Melendez vs Alvarez and Souza vs Lombard would be awesome. |

| They are locked up for three fights and 18 months after they win a tournament or become champion. | |

| alvarez and hector shouldnt be even considered among the elite. Guys are monsters and are good but look at who they have been fighting ,seriously. Alvarez looked great and wrecked huerta but come on, huerta by then wasnt even in the top 30 by then. He was more focus in trying to be an actor rather than fighting by then. Eddie has made it his choice to fight lesser comp and not go the route frankie did , he has saided himself. Him wrecking cans and 2nd string guys is no different than othrs playing it safe out there. Once they step up though among some of the best is wen they fall. The last time eddie has done this ha has fallen. Against aoki(another overated lw) and even wen he was fighting at ww against a 3rd string guy like the goat. | |

He wasn't even top 30? He lost to Florian and Maynard and a close fight with Curran before facing Alvarez. Huerta was still top 15 by then. Yeah Alvarez has done nothing but crush cans. He didn't beat Crusher, Hellboy, or Huerta in the last three years.
