1-Get people who have a minimum level of singing ability
2-Make sure they know the words to the song
3-Make sure they understand how it is supposed to be sung

So often these days you have people who can't sing, flub the words, or in the case of US national anthem, people hold every note and a song that is supposed to have a certain cadence, ends up going for 3 minutes.
