THE BEST EVER-THE LETTER "L"

And in the most loaded contest yet the choice is...The Brown Bomber! I think the letter L has three of the ten top fighters in history and four of the top twenty.

Tough to argue with, especially if outside the ring influence counts. Not only is Joe Louis the longest reigning champion in boxing history, 22KO's in 25 defenses, he came along at a time where, due to the ongoing Depression boxing finances were in shambles, the heavyweight division was a mess and the USA had still not completely confronted the issue of race. Louis created huge gates, big fights, cleaned up the glamour division and became the first black athlete to become a hero to white Amerca. It was Joe Louis who made Jackie Robinson possible.

The honorable mentions are Jake LaMotta, Benny and Sugar Ray Leonard and Ted Kid Lewis. Sam Langford was also an honorable mention and had outside the ring impact not counted might have been a better choice.

In my view Tommy Loughran deserves to be mentioned over Jake LaMotta and I take it as a personal affront that Ricardo Lopez wasn't mentioned.

I am going to hold my breath until Mike Rosenthal mentions Finito!

The again the L's just never stop coming. Nicolino Locche, Lennox Lewis, Little Red Lopez, Sonny Liston, Fidel LaBarba, Duilio Loi, Ismael Laguna, John Henry Lewis, Battling Levinsky...geeze!

M is another loaded initial

Marciano, Monzon, Moore, McFarland, McLarnin, McGovern, Morales, the Marquez brothers damn!

The L's were great. I think everyone must have their favorite in that letter but we all pretty much nod in respect with the choice of Joe Louis. As far as the "M,s" go, I'm going with "The Rock." Nobody appreciates Carlos Monzon more than I do and if he wins, they'll be no complaints here. His combinations were so accurate and perfect, they looked animated.
