What is Berto's path to a superfight? A couple years ago I thought he was going to be P4P greatness. He IMO is in a horrible position because he is not good enough for Pac or Money anytime soon as well as not being able to land those fights anyways. Paul Williams is with Haymon as well so he is out. Cotto turned him down. Clottey is unwatchable and Collazo wants more money than Berto for the rematch. He is good friends with Bradley so that fight is out unless it is the last option.
He had a chance to land SSM and wanted 50-50. That is a fight he shouldve taken but with his previous earnings from HBO, him bringing the trinket, SSM NOT being a draw, SSM being old and finally SSM coming off a big loss, I can at least see where he is coming from. Unfortunately all those reason are purely monetary and not for respect/legacy. I think HBO is doing a disservice not buying the Aydin fight. If he HAS to fight on HBO, the Jones fight makes the most sense. I didnt mind the Urango fight but Kotelnik is not even a beltholder and is coming off a loss. Kotelnik will be severely undersized.
If Berto wanted to EARN a superfight, I think he fights Aydin. I also think that if I was a bigger name such as Berto, I would try to manipulate the other trinketholders to unify and then unify with the winner. Imagine if he fights Aydin, then Mike Jones in an interim fight, and then takes on the WBA-IBF unified champ(which HBO would definitely pick up a WW fight for 3 belts). He is then WBC, WBA, and IBF with Aydin, Jones, Senchenko-Zaveck-Jackiewicz winner, Quintana, Collazo, Urango, and Forbes on his resume. That is nobody outstanding but it clears out the bottom half of the top 10. With those belts and that exposure, I think he can land a Pac fight or at the very least a Cotto or SSM fight for 50-50. If he was active enough(fight every 3-4 months), he would be ready for the superfight by next November.
As a Berto fan, I know this will never happen and I am sad about it. What do you think his next move should be?
