The SuperFight's Empty
PostSubject: The SuperFight's   The SuperFight's EmptyWed Mar 17, 2010 2:31 am

People can say what they want about them or this thread but the idea of the SuperFight was the best idea the original UFC owners had. The idea of their 2 biggest stars fighting for a belt and facing the tournament winner was genius for the time.

How genius???? the first SuperFight at UFC 5 was Royce Gracie vs Ken Shamrock. The PPV buys totaled 265,000 buys, the MMA buy rate record until 2006 when Randy and Chuck fought their rubber match. THATS 11 YEARS PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!

So here it is my thread dedicated to the 6 true SuperFight fights in the UFC's history.

UFC 5 : Royce Gracie and Ken Shamrock, in the 260,000 buy fight, however, the fight didn't live up to the hype, Ken got an early takedown and controlled Gracie, head butting and pot shotting him. Gracie was trying rabbit palm strikes, and leg thigh kicks from the bottom. Ken busted Gracie up though, after 30 minutes Ken controlled the 6 minute overtime (was supposed to be 5) and bloodied up Gracie some more. The fight ended, no judges were there (the HUGE mistake on UFC's part) and the fight was declared a draw. Every fighter that participated in the UFC event that night came out and congratulated Ken, except for Dan Severn. Gracie never fights for the original UFC again.

UFC 6 : Ken Shamrock vs Dan Severn : Ken Shamrock is facing Dan Severn (the UFC 5 tourney winner) for the SuperFight Title. Dan Severn really did open the floodgates for wrestlers. Before then only jiu jiutsu guys were really dominating MMA. Severn might have been the first elite wrestler in the UFC, but Ken Shamrock became the first person to sprawl a wrestler and guillotine them. It was the clear gameplan, Ken almost subbed Severn early and Dan gets out of it only to get sprawled against the fence and choked out in just over 2 minutes. Ken is the first SuperFight (and Heavyweight) Champion. The bout does 190,000 buys.

UFC 7 : Ken Shamrock vs Oleg Taktarov : Ken is facing Oleg the winner of UFC 6 tournament in Buffalo. The 2 participate in a high level grappling match and Shamrock seemed to get the better in the stand up and ground, landing head butts and getting an ankle as well as landing good bare knuckle punches. The fight goes the 30 minutes and goes 3 minutes in the overtime. The fight is declared a draw (still no judges???) and Ken keeps his title. Over 100,000 PPV buys.

UFC 8 : Ken Shamrock vs Kimo : The first Superfight since the inagural one to feature 2 fighters that didnt win the previous tournament. Marco Ruas had won the tournament at UFC 7 but got into contract disputes with UFC. My first hand account from Puerto Rico was that Ken pretty much knew he had this won, the fight was tough and Ken got pot shotted, Kimo goes for another one and boom, Kens got the ankle. Over 100,000 buys, Know for a fact UFC made over 15 million on this fight. One of the greatest tournament ever (David vs Goliath).

UFC 9 : Dan Severn vs Ken Shamrock : 255,000 people pay to see the rematch a year after Severn and Ken fought. Only problem is John McCain, he sends a billion letters and hits all the tv shows, day of the fight, shooting, closed fist punches, and head butts are banned with threat of arrest. To make matters worse the UFC decides to not have a tournament, pretty dull event, and the final was maybe the worst MMA fight ever. Going 30 minutes I hoenstly dont see how the fuck Severn won this fight, Should have been a draw. Either way Severn gets hometown (local basketball palyer being the deciding judge) split decision win and is the SuperFight Champion.

UFC 12 : Dan Severn vs Mark Coleman : The last SuperFight with the title on the line. The SuperFight belt became the Heavyweight Title this night as the politicians were bringing chage to the sport. Severn the champion was facing Mark Coleman who had won 2 tournaments in a row (1 without a final match in the tournament) . The fight wasnt even close, in a battle of 2 great wrestlers COleman gets Severn down and mauls him into a neck crank, Severn taps and Coleman is the Heavyweight Champion of the Wolrld.

There it is the 6 true SuperFights in UFC history
