Subject: Steroids and the HW division's four champions. Wed Jun 23, 2010 4:52 pm
There are four HW champions that matter in the world of MMA right now. Brock Lesnar, who holds the UFC title, Shane Carwin who holds another UFC title, Alistair Overeem, holder of the Strikeforce trinket and Fedor Emelianenko, the lineal HW champion and last Pride champion.
This thread isn't designed as much to throw accusations and Brock or Overeem, those cases are open and shut. Overeem has gained 40 pounds of lean muscle in a matter of 24 months and has quasi-admitted it with his innuendos about spinage and horsemeat. Lesnar was in the WWE which has a long and documented history, and looked significantly more cut with the "roid look", and was busted with HGH before HGH was "HGH!" and illegal. The only people who deny these two have likely done steroids during their lives live in Pretend Land of Good Intentions.
This thread is more regarding Shane Carwin's change of appearance and Fedor Emelianenko.
Carwin in 2006 when he first started fighting in unregulated minor leagues;
Doesn't he look significantly bigger and more cut than he does now? He and Brock will always be monsters, but their bodies have both undergone the same sort of changes since their moves to the UFC, especially in their upperbody areas. Less cut, less volume. Similar to Sylvia when he fought Ricco vs when he fought Couture, Nog or Fedor, just not as blatantly apparent. Color me a cynic, but I don't believe for a second he is any cleaner than anyone else. I know he has the nice guy routine going on and is a perfect gentleman in the face of Lesnar's asshole schtick, but I think that sheilds him from accusations and questions. I know many sports fans hate the idea there heros use PEDS and react angrily when others accuse those they follow, but look at this without fan-glasses on.
Now we turn to Fedor. It has been essentially universally accepted that PEDS were defacto legal and very commonplace in Pride, a place that Fedor ruled with an iron fist for the better part of a decade. Yet of all MMA's HW champions, he has by far undergone the least amount of physical change. Of course that means nothing, Barnett tests dirtier than a Balco freezypop. Does anyone believe or have evidence Fedor has also used steroids?

Is it possible that he has to train more on his actual skills and can't concentrate as much on lifting weights?

From looking at that video, Carwin looked like more of a juicer before he came to the UFC. I would bet he was doing roids back then, but his physique is not as jacked as it used to be so I would bet he's clean.

Ya boom that is my point. He looks juiced then but much cleaner now. But muscle can be built and retained perminantly.
It is kind of scary to think of those two doing roids with the way they hit. If a flyout can turn into a HR with some added power a concussion can turn into a cracked skull.

Hard to get an actual gauge from the video because in those videos Carwin is fighting and out of shape dude who might weigh 230 lbs. He might just look's alot bigger in comparison.
And I agree with Chorky that the added bulk at that time could have been from lifting more then he does now. He looked pretty stiff in both those vid's and current coaches would prob rather he be less muscle and more mobility/agility.
That said any humoungous athlete in this day and age has to be looked at with a very skeptical eye.
As far as Fedor, I tend to think he is and has been clean.

I don't agree on Carwin, because though he looks more cut, his size doesn't seem to me to have changed too much. Fedor? No fucking way.

Carwin looks much different back then, and also his early Sherdog pictures.

I always just viewed Carwin as some working man muscle guy..don't know why, he looks like somebody you work with in construction or something. He probably used though.
Overeem and Brock have definetly used at one time or the other. It's amazing how many people stereotype every current or former pro wrestler as one who uses roids with or without proof...usually look at him is enough evidence...but when Brock becomes UFC HW champ then it's "what doucumented proof do you have that Brock ever used steroids?" when it's clear the guy was far more constipated and shredded in WWE then he was when he started MMA.
As for Fedor, you can't just "look at him" but you could not just look at Roger Clemens or Eric Gagne eitheir. You just never know, we have no reason to believe Fedor has used roids...but you don't say he's used or never used...you just keep him out of the discussion.

carwin's physique is very "juicey" early in his career.
