Ya that was high level BJJ defense. I don't know many green BJJ purple belts.
There is a misconception that Hornbuckle's BJJ is significantly better because he routinely subs scrubs who put him on his back, while Askren has never and probably will never have his shoulders touch the matt before he reaches the UFC.
Ben Askren has better MMA BJJ.

The lack of takedown D was all Askren's skill there.
Agreed.
Wheather Hornbuckle has great takedown D or not is completely irrelevent fighting wrestlers like Askren. Same with Mousasi against Mo..why are we talking about Mousasi's takedown D when Lawal is too good at takedowns for it to even matter?
Friere showed amazing balance and takedown defense against Wilson Reis...but he's more than likely going to get taken down by Joe Warren who is more than likely the best wrestler(credential wise) at FW.

Well keep in mind Mousasi wanted to fight off his back. Mousasi actually attempted to resist maybe 1 or 2 takedowns early in the fight, and when he did, he would land some punches other than that he was content letting Mo wear himself down trying to pass his guard. He did not care about stopping the takedown until it was too late and then he was too gassed to resist any type of King Mo takedown. His game plan was clear, and it backfired....
my point is, guys like Lawal are in this sport because of the takedown..if anybody comes out of a Mo fight looking like they can competently defend takedowns, they don't have good takedown D...they have abnormal takedown D...but i saw Thiago Alves go down to GSP like a chump, repeatedly...and Alves has excellent takedown defense..and unlike Mousasi, his gameplan was not to fight off his back and hope to wear GSP down. So i don't buy into Mousasi has weak takedown D, Mousasi had an arrogant game plan and it backfired.

It was not later in the fight. I thought i was pretty clear...he didnt care to avoid being taken down untill the later rounds when he found out that his conditioning was not compatable with his game plan and he was way behind on the cards...but Mousasi was running on fumes in the championship rounds.
If you don't buy that he wanted to fight off his back in the early rounds(1-3) and did not give a fuck if Lawal took him down because Lawal could not pass his guard and was taking punishment with the hopes of setting up a submission or standing KO of a physically destroyed King Mo in the later round , then you werent watching King Mo vs. Gegard Mousasi.

I remember the fight well, I realized that was his plain early, but he was getting taking down very easily late, like nothing even showcasing Mo's abilities, just IMO Gerard's lack in that department, Mo was doing well striking late too. I had other stuff to say, but will just say I'm not as high on the guy as some are.

I'll take Hornbuckle standing or on the ground. Askren has looked vulnerable to subs, especially in his first fight with Ryan Thomas. His striking game leaves plenty to be desired and Dan has looked great in this tournament.
where have I seen this before?????
Give me a FUCKING break Bird. I know you've got Askren's schlong down your throat because he's from the Lion's Den but damn, you're taking this way to personal. When I said Hornbuckle wasn't trying, I was specifically talking about defending the takedown. I didn't mean that he wasn't trying in the fight.
Yes, I thought Hornbuckle would sub Askren, so what? He damn near did sub him. Everything I said in the post above was correct. He didn't want to strike, of course, because Dan would've eaten him alive standing. So what's your point by posting this?
CLEARLY, you're looking at this fight with Askren colored glasses. You're the one who sounds delusional talking about Askren beating GSP in the future because he's coming off a great performance against Dan fucking Hornbuckle in Bellator. Askren is a great prospect, but he has a ton left to prove before he should even be mentioned as a possible opponent for GSP. It irks me to no end when people say dumb shit like that just because they're infatuated with a fighter. Give it a rest already.

LA was certainly in the minority in how he saw that Mousasi fight, but to his credit, he has stuck to his guns, even if he was wrong.
Lower your weapon Bigs, Askren is as promising a young prospect as the division has right now. Every other division has young champion wrestlers bursting into contendership status overnight, and none of them are as credentialed as Askren. No one has said he is ready for GSP yet, but your focusing anger at what people are very naturally going to say and feel when they see a guy like Askren dominate a feild of good talent like during this tournament makes you seem completely oblivious to the climate of mixed martial arts and the welterweight division for that matter, and just seems bitter and and nearly irrational to me. Kind of like old people screaming at the use of computers. No grandpa twitter pages aren't evil, yes grandpa, wrestlers just like Ben Askren are groomed as title contenders almost immediately. Grandpa, put your pants back on. Grandpa you promised you'd stop drinking. Grandpa wtf a hampster..gran...
The last 2-3 years have brought us these contenders and champions - Brock Lesnar, Cain Velesquez, Shane Carwin, Jon Jones, Ryan Bader, King Mo, Joseph Benivedaz, Joe Warren, Gray Maynard and now Ben Askren.

The takedowns got much easier after he mailed in it and knew he had no answer. So do GSP's. What does that prove LA? Do you use that to dispute anything I'm saying?

No real response Bigs? Looks like check mate to me.
Askren has been a "future contender" in the eyes of MMA writers since before he entered MMA. Can we expect you to hold to this standard everytime a young wrestler with under ten fights is declared a future contender?
Be honest with us bigman, did you just go down with your ship here because it's me?
