Boxing was described by “Rosanne Arnold” as “A game of human chess.” Good description. But let’s face it. Boxer vs. Slugger tends to be more exciting than boxer vs. boxer. Unfortunately, most of the time watching two counterpunchers go at it is about as exciting as watching two old people screw. Then we have the exceptions. The great boxers who got together and held our undivided attention with every fake, set up, jab and (God forbid) big punch they threw. I haven’t seen many that qualify for the “Fight of the Year Award", however here are 2 memorable and yes, exciting fights between two scientific and brilliant counterpunchers. Please feel free to add your own. You're going to have to think pretty hard. lol
1 Wilfred Benitez vs. Sugar Ray Leonard: This fight was pretty scary for Leonard and Benitez fans. Neither fighter could flinch without paying some type of price. Leonard’s speed seemed matched by Benitez. In the rare case they exchanged punches, Wilfred held his own and seem to match Ray’s power as well. Benitez was able to reach Ray with combos in mid ring and off the ropes. However, Leonard worked the body and threw the uppercut enough to gain a considerable lead going into round 15. In the end, both resorted to fighting it out and Leonard came out on top.
2. Michael Spinks vs. Eddie Gregory: Michael Spinks winning his first Light Heavyweight Title against Eddie Gregory was actually shown on a weekend afternoon via free network TV. Two all time greats (Yes, I consider Eddie an ATG) with tremendous counterpunching ability and power go at it for 15 rounds. From my memory, it was a brilliant game of give and take with the Spinks jab closing Eddie’s eye and making the difference. Neither man came close to stopping the other, but I always felt that it was Eddie Gregory (Eddie Mustafa Muhammad) and Spinks who were the top fighters in the 80s, LH division. Dwight Braxton was not a distant 3rd, but in my judgment, that was his spot.
