"I take a lot of criticism, but I try my best to try to help promote this fucking sport, when nobody else, including television executives could give two shits because they think it’s barbaric and it’s filled with a bunch of hoodlums, which is exactly how it looked to everyone watching the show Saturday night. The problem with MMA is that these Internet guys ruin the sport because they’re negative 90 percent of the time. I try to say as many good things about these athletes in this sport on a network level — not on an underground level or a Spike TV cable level or a pay-per-view level. My job isn't to promote the sport. I’m paid to give my opinion and to describe what I see and it’s my opinion that the guys they had Jake fight were supposed to beat him. That's how I see it. I said it, so I believe it. That’s disrespect. Do you mean to tell me that Strikeforce didn’t bring a former Pride champion [like] Dan Henderson in to beat Jake Shields? Come on, man. I'm also not blaming Miller for what happened. Mayhem didn’t do anything that Shane Mosely hasn’t done, or other fighters who aren’t a part of the main event of the card who get in the cage or the ring to hype a future fight haven't done hundreds of times before. It always happens. That’s not a big deal. The reaction from Gilbert and Jake and all these guys was what was the big deal. It was improper, and to be honest, it was shameful."

Yeah he was really doing a good job saying that shit like that brawl happens all the time in mma. I do agree what happened was shameful though

If the guys started pulling a "The Last Boy Scout" routine, where the athlete starts shooting the opposition as he runs down the field, I would agree. But what do these execs show? The bench clearing brawl. Not shameful.

I like Gus and to be honest he may know as much as Mike Goldberg, I like him too by the way. The "sometimes that happens" comment was probably more about life in general, and how sometimes cooler heads don't prevail, since I've only seen that one other time in MMA, and it was with Diaz brothers again.

Gus Johnson is fucking awful, I can't stand the guy. I would much rather listen to Goldberg and I'm not very big on him either.

Gus Johnson just made himself look like an ass. He's supposed to be a professional, period. He's not Dana White dropping F bombs and boasting about all the great things he does for the sport. He's a fucking commentator, he's paid to call the fights and that's his only role.

Gus has always been a joke, and judging from that rant always will be a joke...

This reaction by Gus is as silly as the brawl. He makes basic uniform points while sounding like a fucking idiot. A response like this is not a path wanted or needed from Gus.

I think Gus is "fucking' moron and this statement didn't change my opinion.

Dana was right. What Gus Johnson said during the brawl was the worst thing he could have said in that situation.

It's not so much "this happens" because it does happen. But the "all the testosterone" makes it sound like "ths is what happens when you get too many meathead MMA fighters in the same cage at the same time"

He made a mistake spur of the moment, mostly because the Diaz brothers and Ceasar Gracie mafia was keeping it gangster, embarrassing our sport. Who knows what Joe and Mike might say if this shit happened at a UFC event.

"Sometimes this happens in MMA" Ok, and? Sometimes this happens in all combat sports. MMA no different. Sometimes this happens in baseball. Sometimes this happens in all sports. Maybe Gus should have said that. Still, what he said isn't that big of a deal or particularly untrue. Didn't the Diaz brothers get into a frucas with KJ Noons before? Wasn't there a complete riot involving a couple of fighters and one of their camps at a small show recently?

Gus may not be perfect but he is still pretty good. MMA fans cannibalize good announcers like nobodies business. Only Bas gets universal love. Bas of all people? Yikes.




MMA is a brutal combat sport. Like it or don't. Who gives a fuck about this fical "casual" fan too stupid to figure shit out for themselves?

he is a big time announcer and he does and has done a good job of getting to learn the sport

no he doesn't get it. Claims on another thread earlier today that no one ever complained about the size. I know multiple people have multiple times. I can't stand the size of his sigs.

lol... Damn, guess that means I have read way too many posts because I've seen at least a dozen complaints in the last week. He has to have seen some of them... I stand by my take that he probably just doesn't "really" care.
