Dana declares Sonnen vs Marquart is for shot

LAS VEGAS – The winner of Saturday's UFC 109 co-main-event fight between Nate Marquardt (29-8-2 MMA, 8-2 UFC) and Chael Sonnen (24-10-1 MMA, 3-3 UFC) will earn a middleweight title shot.

White, who emceed today's presser at Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino's Mizuya Lounge in Las Vegas, said he always considered the co-headlining fight a No. 1 contender's bout.

"We always had it in mind," White said. "These are two of the top five [middleweights] in the world depending on what you look at."

White said Marquardt, who's 4-1 (with a controversial split-decision loss to Thales Leites) since his first unsuccessful bid at the belt, is especially worthy.

"Nate's been deserving it for a while," White said.

If Sonnen makes it past Nate somehow, I will laugh all the way to the bank, the bank that Silva won't be filling with a significant payday, for turning down a Dan Henderson fight when a fight with Sonnen would literally do half as many buys.

Well atleast Dana would finally get his wish for a non rematch that he wants. He obviously wanted either Maia or Bisping to win since they had not fought Anderson yet.

He didn't want Maia. Butt scooting terrified BJJ blackbelts don't sell and haven't worked out well in title fights with Anderson yet.

Dana was very happy when Nate decapitated him. Dana wanted Nate and Dan to rematch one after the other, imo.

Sonnen is gonna get ran over by Marquardt.

Spider vs Vitor will do very good buys I think especially with BJ on the card also.

agreed I think chael is going to show up to fight for this one for some reason. I got nate for sure but you never know and if chael does pull it off I cant wait for the spider to smash his face in for all the shit talk.

I got Nate in this fight too, but think it will probably go all 3 rounds. Chael is tough and very technical, but unfortunately, is probably not as good as he thinks he is.

I think Sonnen has an outside chance of winning this one. If he can weather the early storm he could grind out a decision.

I would agree that Nate is the most deserving and should get it over Vitor... But if Chael somehow pulls a miracle out his ass, Vitor should get the shot over Chael, IMO. Yes, wins over Miller, Okami and Nate would be impressive, but his Magoo personality is a ratings disaster...

His personality is pretty flamboyant actually. I like me some Chael.


On another note, until I actually saw him fight, I assumed Chael Sonnen was Japanese and for a while I confused him with Ryo Chonnan.
