Bas Rutten knows a little bit about Dutch fighters, so when he talked to Sherdog about Alistair Overeem and his chances in a UFC heavyweight title fight with Junior dos Santos, it was worth listening to. The legendary fighter and broadcaster does not think too highly of Overeem's punch resistance.

From the interview:

"I think Alistair, everything he does is one single shot because he knows he's got that glass jaw as well. He's been knocked out quite a few times in the past, even by Chuck Liddell as well. Every time when he punches, one hand is up. He throws single shots; he doesn't throw combinations. You saw that when he fought [Fabricio] Werdum. Werdum was actually tagging him more than he did to Werdum. I think that Junior dos Santos, with his combinations, his reach, I think he's going to tag him and he's going to throw combos and I think that yeah, he's going to take this fight."

There is other Bas goodness in the interview including talking about Cyborg Santos' positive steroid test and his new TV show.

Bobbitt pretty much nailed it. Rutten has been ripping Overeem since the minute he left Golden Glory. Won't be surprised if he never picks Overeem again in a big fight unless he's a clear favorite over the person he is fighting.

Personally, i'm thinking Overeem will be UFC Champion.

Overeem could be a huge draw. I hope he wins. Bas is right though...chin a liability.

What evidence do we really have that he has a "glass jaw"? He's been knocked out by:

Sergei Kharitonov- a known heavy hitter
Chuck Liddell- a known heavy hitter
Mauricio Rua- a known heavy hitter
Rogerio Nogueira- a known heavy hitter
Bobby Hoffman- a well rounded fighter who wasn't exactly "shitty" when they fought

How does getting knocked out 6 times in 48 fights by two heavyweights and three known killers equate to a guy having a glass jaw?

yup, pre fall out, Bas had Reem ranked #1 in the world. So what has happened since then for him to change his mind? Certainly nothing that has happened in a fight.

But I also like Jr in that fight. And chin is one part of that reasoning.

Bobbit, Kings and Captain are right. If Overeem didn't leave then Bas would be saying Overeem is going to win as he is more powerful and has the better kicks/knees. He wont have to worry about the takedown from JDS and will just attack.

Some fighters like Chael Sonnen and Melvin Gulliard have a bunch of fights in long careers, and many losses to high level submission guys. We question their ground game just the same. Overeem also lost once to Remy by decision in a fight he utterly dominsted solely because his chin failed him when caught clean by a Rely, who isn't known for his punching power, hit him with a straight that wasnt thrown with a ton of power. That knockdown stole the fight. A guy who has ten losses because of strikes is not a durable fighter. Overeem has lost fights numerous times in his career when his button is pressed suddenly in fights he is winning. Look, I get what you're doing. I did the same thing with AA for a while. But the fact remains, Overeem has proven his chin cannot withstand power punchers. Dos Santos has taken power strikes and walked through them. I know he hasn't been hit as much or had near as many fights but I suspect he has the better chin by far.

So are you saying being knocked out has more to do with the chin than the accuracy and power of strike being thrown by the other fighter?

Where a punch hits and how hard it hits = everything.

Chin does matter if you're like Andre Arlovski but the majority of the time it has to do with the punch.

Chin talk is pointless. Even when discusssing Andrei Arlovski. The chin is not his problem, his problem was getting hit square on the button with power punches. You mean to tell me the shots that Fedor, Rogers, and Sergei landed on him were only knockout punches because Arlovski can't take a punch? I disagree and the visual evidence and the power all three of the fighters possess back that up. He jumped face first into an overhand right against Fedor. Rogers and Sergei both landed several HUGE power punches on AA.

AA just got knocked out a few times recently. It only takes one knockout for a bunch of idiots to question a fighters chin...so naturally, when you lose a few fights by knockout, it's because you have a glass chin rather than simply being unable to get out of the way of knockout punches.

Some fighters can fight a murderers row of strikers in ten year careers like Shogun, Fedor, Hendo, Rampage and other fighters and be renowned for their ability to take damage. Overeem has never been included in this group. His chin/defense is a question at this level.

At heavyweight everyone is in trouble if hit cleanly. The problem is your talking about a guy who's fought over 60 times, and only ever been knocked out by known knockout artists, like he's about to get knocked out by Rich Franklin or some shit. It's probably more fair to say that Overeem has run into trouble against heavy hitters who know how to find the button than his chin has failed him or his defense is that poor. If his chin is questionable why didn't Vitor Befort knock him out, or Mark Hunt, or Igor Vovchanchyn, or Paul Buentello, or Rogers, or Duffee, or Cro Cop?

If his defense is so bad and his chin is such a question how did he survive getting dropped by a punch from Hunt to grab the sub 20 seconds later? How did he avoid getting nailed by Vitor when he whiffed on a flying knee or a punch? How did he keep Todd Duffee from ending him just as quickly as he ended Duffee?

Would we even be having this conversation if he never fought Shogun, Sergei, Minotoro, and Chuck?
