UFC 125 a Financial Failure Empty
PostSubject: UFC 125 a Financial Failure   UFC 125 a Financial Failure EmptySun Jan 16, 2011 7:06 pm

It has come out that almost half of the listed crowd attending UFC 125 got in free. The show was expected to do low PPV numbers but no one expected Maynard vs Edgar 2 to be that big of a failure at the box office.

UFC 125 on Jan. 1 in Las Vegas generated a $2.17 million gate on 6,978 tickets sold, according to Nevada State Athletic Commission figures released on Thursday. Comp tickets totaled 5,896 seats, or almost 46% of the live audience for UFC 125, which featured champion Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard.

Their title fight generated the second-lowest total for ticket sales at a numbered UFC event in Las Vegas over at least the last six years, edging only UFC 106 in November 2009, when Tito Ortiz battled Forrest Griffin.

I think they just thought it would be boring but I would expect Maynard vs Edgar 3 will do alot better.

It would make sense but still wouldnt answer the question if Edgar can sell better after his ballsy performance against Gray in there second fight.

i agree, i personally dont think Edgar is ever going to be a main attraction, its clear Zuffa was hoping Maynard took the belt from him IMO

Maynard for the sake of it being Maynard, or Maynard so that they can put BJ (or someone marketable) in against him?

I heard rumors that they feel Edgar is better suited at 145 and dont really want him as the 155 pound kingpin. They think (or thought) Maynard was big and strong and everything a 155 pound lightweight should be.

I dont agree with that though. Frankie is a great 155er and should stay there.

Probably because there's a lot cooler shit to do in Vegas on Jan. 1st for a card that didn't really have any huge fights on it

Yeah I was alittle surprised that the UFC didnt have bigger names on the card because of it being the New Years Day card.

Maynard has absolutely zero personality. Why would they care one way or the other?

I think that a lot of their ticket and PPV sales issues have more to do with everybody being broke after Christmas during a crappy economy. Sales always kind of suck in winter anyway. I think the 02/05 bout will do better numbers overall.

Of course it will do better sales because there are a ton of stars on the card.
