I LOVE how the author falls for the notion that the stuff Manny is doing with Ariza isn't "old school," and that Manny's rise throught the divisions is unique because Kelly Pavlik couldn't do it.
Hey Ted? Go read Nat Fleischer's pamphlet written in 1937 on training fighters or the most recent bio of Jim Jeffries. Swimming? Check. Plyometrics? Check. Speed work? Check. Emphasis on core work? Yup.
Ted, you might also want to study the career of Jimmy McLarnin (who beat 112 HOFers and carried his power to 147 to such a degree that he won the undipsuted welter title by KO1).

I'm surprised there haven't been any PED jokes or race baiting yet. You guys are way too "civilized."

One interesting thing is Manny doesn't lift weights. As far as I know, steroids are only useful in that context.

I love the part of the thread that has the tale of the tape for Pac's fights. His weight on fight night against Morales 144. Goes up by a pound or 2 for most subsequent fights and weighs around 149 for Clottey.
He didn't make a big change. Putting on a 5 pounds over 3.5 year period.
But conspiracy theorists have been (and still are) convinced that he is on PEDs.

PEDS are useful for just about everything. Even if you don't lift weights, you're breaking down muscles so having a faster recovery time or increasing stamina/energy still, or better injury resistance (depending on what you're on) matters a ton.
I think the main point of the article is just to point out that Manny is doing things in an unconventional way and how Ariza and the like are working to create a new standard by blending various schools of thought. They are trying to measure and implement various training techniques from boxing's history and from other sports to along with detailed analysis to create a better boxing training routine. I think the way Manny's team is going about things is more scientific than almost everyone else right now and really the epitome of proper training.
The result of their effort is Manny. A product that speaks for itself. Assuming he's clean...

why would we assume he isn't clean!!!!! the man put 5 pounds on his frame over 3 years!!!!! It isn't as if he was fighting at 130, weighing 144 on fight night and now is fighting at 147, weighing 160 on fight night (and still being ripped). He went from 129/144 to 144 or 145/148-149. He just stopped drying out.
Manny weighs less on fight night than most of the top 140lb fighters. I'd bet Ortiz, Khan, Maidana, Alexander, and Bradley all rehydrate up to at least 148 or 149 (Manny's fight night weight for past 2 fights). Manny could make 140 with not alot of trouble. I don't recall the exact amount but when Bradley fought at 147 against Abregu he weighed more than 148 on fight night.
Manny is a 140 lb fighter not drying out to make 140. he then weighs the same on fight night that he would if he made 140. End of story.
