| You know what I hate. Sports announcers using terms from other sports.
They do it in so many sports today and it always makes no sense.

They do it in so many sports today and it always makes no sense. Some can work. When I was playing a zillion years ago we always had our "home run" play for the week etc. But one has to do it right.

| No, there is no home run play marble.
I played football, basketball, and soccer through highschool. I played college in soccer. There is no mixing of the sports terms. There is no home run play in football. There is no fast break in football.
There are only a few sportscasters who understand where you could properly slip in another sports term. Most just make me cringe.

| Neophytes who try to use improper analogies are made to look like fools. | |

How about playcalls "throwing someone a curveball?" How about the dreaded soccer "suplex?" Have you forgotten the basketball "double the fucking jab?"

| True, but there are some boxing-based analogies that can be applied pretty universally to any given sport:
1) Knockout - the big game-winning, game-ending play that puts takes out the other side
2) In a corner/on the ropes - the pressure situation where one side has a clear advantage and the other side needs to get agressive to come back
3) Throwing in the towel - not literally of course, but essentially giving up on a game as unwinnable (putting in your bench warmers, pulling back from the pack in a race to avoid a crash, etc.)
Any others? | |
