When you watch the footage they attached remember Lionel Rose was one of a handful of teenage champions and got that way by beating ATG Fighting Harada. So watch what Olivares is doing in that context. He is beating the bejeesus out of one hell of a fighter.
El Puas had two great nicknames. The Spanish one (barb wire) and one done for his American crowds in LA, and one of my favorites, "Rockabye Ruben," because he put men to sleep The best of an absolutely LOADED bantamweight division of the late 1960's and early 1970's. Mexico City alone had five guys in Jesus Pimintel, Chucho Castillo, Rodlofo Martinez, Rafael Hererra and Olivares who would have held straps today. Then there were guys like Rudkin and Sakurai and Burruni, Efren Torres and Betulio Gonzales. Just scary how deep and strong that division was. Comparable to the light heavies of the late 1970's.
Olivares went to 126 where he won 50% of the featherweight crown drilling Bobby Chacon. Then giving up six inches in height and five inches in reach he gave a young Alexis Arguello hell for twelve rounds before a crunching Alexis uppercut turned things around. Ruben Olivares remains the finest bodypuncher I have ever seen.
The honorable mentions include Ninja Immortal Manuel Ortiz, HOFer Carlos Ortiz, ATG LHW Philadelphia Jack O'Brien and HOFer Bobo Olson. I was pleased to see the Asian Sal Sanchez, Masao Obha included. Flyweight king and an exceptional fighter killed in a carwreck at 23 while flyweight titlist.

Gotta be Willie Pep right? Other guys might include the Hawk and the guy he beat to win the 140 crown and I guess flyweight legend Pascual Perez.

From now on, I'm going to wait until at least noon to give my nominations. For me to forget about Pep and Pryor shows me that my brain is not quite up to functioning until at least 11 am. The pick is obviously Pep. Pryor's one of my favorite fighters and I've mentioned him on a number of occasions.

Yup. Unfortunately both of those guys died too young. Anifowashe was so badly injured he never fought in the US again and he died under mysterious curcumstances back home. He may have tried to fight one more time and it killed him. Quiroga was knifed to death while in his early 30's.
