Jose Benavidez. 17 years old. Throws combos to the body and head in lightening fashion. Brings back memories of a young "Oscar De La Hoya" but I think he's even sharper than that. Freddie Roach has stated that "Jose is his future" and a bright future Freddie has. Yeah, I'm sticking my neck out on this one. I'm predicting Jose becomes a HOF, ATG fighter and dominates which ever division (LW, JW, WW) he decides to take over. Join the bandwagon now or forever be left behind.

You and I both, Captain. The way he throws those combos to the body and head is incredible. Just when we thought the sport was on it's way out, this guy comes along. Boxing's tradition is to produce genius athletes in every era. The present era is getting ready to light the hell up.

This is the tall teenager, right? Kid's got what? Five fights? He has wins over guys with a combined record of 17-20-4?
DeLa Hoya's first five opponents? Combined record of 70-21-7.
Just sayin'.
The kid's a prospect with some tools. But let's not get giddy just yet.

I'm sticking my neck out on this one. I don't care if his opponents had a combined record of 1-50. I'm making the prediction based on what I've seen. In my opinion, this guy is a 17 or 18 year old prodige. Mark my words, we're looking at a 3 time champion here. Oh, just one more thing. Remember Big George on USA Tuesday Night fights? I don't care if he was knocking out grandmothers in there. If you asked me, he takes Tyson out in two.

Yup. Now I'm very high on the kid too. But it's awfully early.

I like the neck sticking! But you well know that the level of competition is everything. If this kid really is the goods? He oughtta be fighting ranked guys in 2011 and not the quality of guys he has been in with thus far. He also oughtta stay on the fighting every month schedule rather than having three months between fights.
Look I'm high on the kid too. But I've seen too many can't miss guys, Womack, Ayala Jr, Howard Davis, Breland, Bumphus etc not live up to the expectations to get giddy over a guy who hasn't done anything yet.
I hope in five years you can tell me "I told you so." I am dying to see true greatness once again.

Marble, I don't think it'll take five years. Your judgement is much more rational than mine on this subject. I'm having some fun, picking a fighter that I see greatness in and sticking with it. Roach has said this guy Jose is his future. You'll see him against some steep competition soon.

Those guys look like they are three weight divisions apart don't they? Once Manny hit him, Jose's attitude changed a bit didn't it? Then Manny boxes his ears LOL!
Manny's footwork has really settled down.

De La Hoya had a more extensive amateur background than this kid has. Even though he was a national golden gloves champ his handlers seem to be taking a Mexican style approach, minimal amateur fights and more pro fights against lesser opponents. Isn't this the sort of fighter we've all been clamoring for??? Don't many of us complain that many good pros have an amateur style that doesn't translate to the professional ranks???? Don't we complain that many good fighters are limited with their amateurish trainers? Well here comes a kid that turns pro early and is taking fights to learn how to be a better pro. Here is a kid that before his career started sought the tutelage of consummate professional in Freddie Roach. This kid is what we've been waiting for. Marble you write long diatribes about how training and amount of fights has dwindled in recent times. Well this kid will have his 8th fight this year come September and will probably have two more after that. What more can we ask for in 2010???

The kid CLEARLY has a pro style already. Good news. The kid is taking junk fights though. Just junk. In seven fights he has fought ten rounds. How much can one learn blowing through overmatched opposition? He was on a monthly pace (love that) and then took a few months off, why? In 2010 what more can I ask for? Not much. That's why I said in 2011 I want him facing ranked fighters.
Now of course Freddie Roach is Freddie Roach and I'm well, not. So who's judgement are you going to trust?

Look at that video. You think Manny ever in a real fight would just sit there and cover up and not throw back? Come on he was just going easy and getting some work in. He was not trying to KO the kid. But yes the kid is very very talented.

He said he'd never taken a vacation. That boxing had been his job since he could remember and him and his people wanted him to have a breather. He's only 18 so it's good they're looking after his mental health. Too many guys who explode on the scene young, burn out early.
I'm pretty sure there was a vid of him handling Mike Dallas Jr. in sparring. I couldn't find it, but I'm almost positive I saw it.
