| Joel Casamayor was a greatest of the great amateur. But is he a HOFer? Let's look. Casamayor didn't face a ranked guy until he fought Jong-Kwon Baek in hist 21st fight.
Baek-Unbeaten and ranked #3 at 130. Casamayor wins every round until the fight is stopped. TKO5.
Robert Garcia-Ranked #10, but he had been KO'd by Ben Tackie and Chico in the last year. In a VERY tough fight Casamayor gets him in 9. TKO9.
Acelino Freitas-Ranked #3 and unbeaten. Fretias hands Joel his first loss. UDby12..
Nate Campbell-Unbeaten and ranked #10. Casamayor schools him. UD10.
Diego Corrales-Had won four straight fights since his loss to Mayweather. Ranked #5 at 130. In his biggest win to date Casamyor drops Corrales twice before the fight is stopped on cuts. TKO6.
Corrales II-In the rematch Chico is leading all the way when Casamayor dumps him in the 11th. It's not enough. Chico by split decision.
Jose Luis Castillo-THE MAN at5 135. Casamayor puts on a spirited fight. But Castillo was better. SD Castillo.
Almazbek Raymkulov-Unbeaten and ranked #10. Draw.
Corrales III-Chico is now at the end. He has been KO'd by JL Castillo, is no longer ranked and he fails to make weight. Casamyor gives up four pounds and scrapes by. SD12. This fight wins him the true lightweight title.
Jose Santa Cruz-Ranked #3. As bad a decision as you will ever see. SD12.
Michael Katsidis-Ranked #6 and unbeaten. Casamayor schools him. TKO10.
Juan Manuel Marquez-Clearly the best fighter Csamayor ever faced. Sadly, Joel is well past it now. He fights very well and it is close when Marquez summons a few great moments. TKOby11.
So let's see. THE MAN at 135 with one defense. 0-1 against HOF level guys. 7-4-1 against ranked guys.
It's a fine career. But I can find 25 guys not in the Hall, and who will never go in, with demonstrably better credentials. Come on Dan, don't lower the standards.

You should send him Bushy Graham's resume with a note that says "Hey Dan? How about ME?"

| he is a top 15 amateur all time easy
probably not hall worthy but he was the man in the division for a brief stint, and for a good time was challengin the man it seemed like every other fight
The Freitas fight was close and he lost due to the point deductions IMO
still a great fighter, shit maybe is worthy but................HE IS STILL ACTIVE

Those Kripsy Kreme's are fucking up his judgment. Don't Eat and Type, Dan.

| I think Casa might sneak into the HOF, being the best Cuban of his era (although Gamboa and Rigondeaux have a good shot at surpassing him). I personally wouldn't vote for him. | |

| Dan Rafael is not as well versed as most other boxing writers. His interest is focused heavily on the last 25-30 years. Casamayor was a very good fighter. Very good. Not great.
It is the Hall of Fame. not the Hall of very good.

| I maybe the only 1 who thinks Dan isnt crazy with this 1. I think Casamayor had a very nice career and beat alot of very good fighters. The frietas fight i actually thought the same way Bird did that without the point deductions he wins that fight. I could make arguements why he shouldnt be in and u can make arguements why he should but either way i wouldnt be very upset. | |

| If you list all of the guys who fought from 1990-2010, that should be discussed as a possible candidate for the Hall of Fame, Casamayor would be on the list. I just don't think he should make it in.
I have a bad feeling that if we had the discussion in 2030 of the hall of famers who fought between 1990 and 2010, there are going to be more than a couple of guys who got in who are questionable.

| The truly sad part is you could send in an argument against Casamayor for HOF, to Mr. Twinkie's (Rafael's) friday chat, and Mr. Twinkie, probably resorts to calling you an idiot. | |

| At first I don't have a problem but after you went over his resume Marble it is pretty weak.
Talent wise he's worthy, but it's about what you do as a professional. |

Casamayor is a world class boxer but his resume is a little thin to enter Canastota, I mean he couldn't beat Castillo. |

| There's him Castillo and Corrales who are all in the same boat to me with Freitas on the outside. JMM did most of his work at 126, but he continued to make his mark when he moved up.
I might vote for Casa if I were in that position. It was an offhand comment in a brief write up anyways. I assume he puts more thought in when it comes down to actually voting who gets in and out. |

See I think that's kind of right. I think Chico and Castillo and Casamayor are all in the same general category. Very good fighters with fine careers who are a category short of being a HOFer. I mean for example, anyone want to try to make the case any of those guys were better/more accomplished than Buddy McGirt or Simon Brown or Donald Curry or going back further men like John Conteh or Alfredo Escalera or Esteban DeJesus or Betulio Gonzales or Pone Kingpetch or Masao Obha? Yet does anyone think those men are going in?
