Subject: Reason as to why Amir Khan's July fight is off Fri Jun 11, 2010 11:33 am
Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer confirmed BoxingScene.com's story from Thursday - that Amir Khan's scheduled return on July 31 has been put off until December. Schaefer told Ron Lewis of the Times Online that a meeting was held with Sky TV and a July date was not the best direction.
“After the World Cup and during the holidays is not a good time to do pay-per-view,” Schaefer said. “Given the success of the Malignaggi fight, which got great viewing figures in America, it might not be the best thing to have a poor pay-per-view. Better to wait.”
There are three options that include Juan Manuel Marquez [if he beats Juan Diaz next month], Marcos Maidana and Joel Casamayor. Khan and his trainer Freddie Roach are pressing to land Maidana, but Schaefer says a fight against Marquez would be a bigger fight for the British star.
“Amir and Freddie Roach tell me they want Maidana, but I think Márquez, if he beats Juan Diaz in their rematch will be bigger,” Schaefer said. “That fight could be in England or the US.”
Junior welterweight titlist Amir Khan won't fight July 31, as had been discussed, Golden Boy's Richard Schaefer told ESPN.com. Schaefer is in England this week and met with Khan to discuss a potential fight with Joel Casamayor or Michael Katsidis. It would have taken place in England and televised in the U.S. as part of the HBO PPV show headlined by the Juan Manuel Marquez-Juan Diaz rematch. However, Khan will instead be in Las Vegas ringside for that fight. Schaefer said Khan won't fight mainly because Sky, the British network he was talking to about Khan, "feels that July and August are big holiday months and everyone is gone plus you have the World Cup, which is like religion there, so that's bad for pay-per-view." Schaefer said Khan would more likely return in November or December, possibly in the U.S. against Marquez if he beats Diaz.

Yep, cant afford to pay Khan and a good opponent hoping the PPV does well
Im sure Guerrero vs Casamayor is cheaper to make
Funny how GBP uses the World Cup as an excuse here, but not for the El Canelo Alvarez
"We actually tried to see if we could get him back on the July 31st pay-per-view card but I have been told that Televisa in Mexico is going to do a special for Canelo - tying it in with the World Cup soccer finals. It's amazing to have this guy fight right before or after the World Cup finals," Schaefer told BoxingScene.com

It's Sky Sports who don't want it so soon after the world cup not Golden Boy.

The PPV would not have to do well to cover the costs. Whatever, Khan can sit on his hands for 6 months.

Because they want to avoid a bad PPV, they cant afford to pay Khan's purse!
Its about $, Khan's agreement w/GBP calls for 1.5 million purse minimum
And like I said, Canelo is using the World Cup to help promote his fight not the other way around

I am not bothered as long as Khan faces Maidana. Sure I want Khan active but it's network politics.

$1.5 million for Khan. $400 grand for casa = $1.9 mill
10 000 seat gate and 50 000 domestic buys in GB and the promotion breaks even.
I bet it would eclipse those numbers even in the summer, plus $ from HBO PPV.

Khan should be fighting the elite: Bradley, Alexander, JMM, Pac.
Maidana is exciting but he is a class below the others.

Alot of people keep accusing Khan of ducking Maidana, he needs to silence them. Plus Khan needs to face this sort of opponent to evolve, he's only 23 and the last type of opponent he faced like this knocked him out.

Would of been nice to see Khan vs Prescott II on this card
GBP is retarted for not even considering that rematch, I'm sure a alot easier to make but they want everything in house....

I would be up for a rematch had Kevin Mitchell not outclassed Prescott. He made it look so easy that there isn't really any point in a rematch anymore.

Arrrrgh! Fighters have to FIGHT to get better. Not every fight can be a huge payday. Stay active, get better and the big fights will come.

So?
Its a fight like Marble said - helps Khan develop
If he's so above Prescott now who obliterated him in 1 round, why not take it? Make the fans forget about that 60 second destruction

What if they put a fight in South Africa?
Throw Ali Funkea or Kaizer Mabuza a bone. If they could get a location, there wouldn't be an issue of people showing up or watching. The World Cup is an opportunity, not a conflict of interest against putting on a big fight.

Because it doesn't make any sense financially nor does it really help his career at this stage.

No way
it helps his career BIG time, erases that KO, avenges his terrible loss
and your saying that Prescott demands a bigger purse that Casamayor? lol
Probably would of been easy to make for the 7/31 PPV in the UK
GBP, inept promoters

Khan's fighting nobody in July, Sky have no interest in staging a pay per view until after the summer.

I know just saying that it didnt have to fall on Sky
GBP could have looked at Prescott (cheaper option than Casa, Katsidis) as his opponent instead of putting him on the shelf til the fall/winter

But there is no point in fighting if no British network is going to broadcast it.

I thought he wanted to be a star in the US? Isnt he already a draw in the UK?????
Again, poor job by GBP, could of thrown it online or tried selling the rights to another network
GBP owns Ring Magazine , the url is ringTV.com
Why not charge and stream it online? Still could of made plenty of $ off the gate
