Sources close to the situation have advised BoxingScene.com that a deal was reached for a fight between unbeaten welterweight prospect Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (32-0-1, 24KOs) and once-beaten Luciano Cuello (26-1, 12KOs). I've heard the fight will take place at a catch-weight of 150-pounds on July 10 in Mexico. A press conference to officially announce the fight will take place in the next couple of days, in Mexico.
Cuello gave Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. all he could handle last March. In fact, Cuello came within a few points of derailing Chavez's unbeaten run. At the end of the night, the scores were 96-94, 96-95 and 97-93, all for Chavez.
The rivalry between Chavez and Alvarez is well known to Mexico fight fans. Strategically, Alvarez wants to prove to the Mexican fans that he's a better fighter than Chavez by putting on a better performance against Cuello.
Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer told BoxingScene a few weeks ago that Alvarez's July fight will receive a major showcase on Mexican television. Televisa plans to air his fight with the World Cup soccer finals.
"We actually tried to see if we could get him back on the July 31st pay-per-view card but I have been told that Televisa in Mexico is going to do a special for Canelo - tying it in with the World Cup soccer finals. It's amazing to have this guy fight right before or after the World Cup finals," Schaefer told BoxingScene.com.
