| Style is more important in terms of getting a title shot than finishing fights. Lyoto, Fitch, Okami, etc. had a difficult time getting a shot at the belt because they are perceived to be boring fighters. As soon as Lyoto got a KO over Thiago he gets a title shot, that was no mistake. Okami never gets a title shot because he's boring as hell and Fitch can't get one now because his style isn't exciting to the average fan and apparently because he won't fight Kos.
If you put on exciting fights and win you can get a title shot, it doesn't matter whether you finish.

He insists on standing in fights he should just take to the ground. He could have prison raped Diaz but he stood with him to prove a point. Maynard if anything is an example of a wrestler who will lose fights he could win by trying to be more exciting and well rounded. I know he had a bad looking fight against No Love, but you could see that coming a mile away with the way their resumes and skillsets matched up. I guess you're right about the Diaz fight. He coulda clearly won on the ground. But that fight didn't look good either. Just don't care to see his fights. Sonnen is fucking awfull about this shit though.

Finished fights tend to be more exciting, but that's not always the case. If you can stay active and dominate your opponent to decisions, a la GSP, you'll get a title as fast as if you were getting TKOs all the time. If you dominate a fighter, you always look good. One way to dominate is to finish strongly, but going to a lopsided decision is just as good.

If you put on exciting fights and win you can get a title shot, it doesn't matter whether you finish. While I am not disagreeing with what your concept is really, I have to point out you're arguing against finishing, in favor of style in this debate, but your case in point was a first round KO from a fighter who only ever scored decisions. He was boring why? Because he didn't finish fights. Finishing fights : best way to not be boring.

You're right in that particular instance, however, what Machida showed in that fight is that he can be aggressive and finish. Since that time, Machida has been much more aggressive and it has shown not only in the UFC's promoting of him but also in the fans support. His style has changed dramatically since that fight. He's much more willing to engage which was a major knock on him before the Thiago KO.

| My my we are venemous after that step back. Machida getting his eye blown out like a Koi fish must have really jaded you. Don't worry though, Machida will probably live down the fact that he got his shit pushed in twice by the same guy some day. | |
