I don't have a problem with it. Hopefully it just brings more attention to Strikeforce and the real fighters that are on the card. Also what is the difference between Hershel Walker doing MMA and someone like Marcus Davis? I know Walker is a little older but not too different IMO. Only thing is Walker is a HOFer so it makes it more interesting.

Jim Rome didn't put Davis on his show though. We KNOW Dana or the other org's presidents don't care about the sport's legitimacy. I hope you're right about bringing attention to the rest of the card, but I doubt that comes up in the interview.

I heard Hershel on ESPN radio last week, can't remember what show maye Herd. Anyways they brought up his MMA debut, he was very respectful about MMA and the skill and conditioning it takes. He likes the challenge which most elite athletes do, just something he can get motivated about post football. Also they talked to him about the NFL playoffs quite a bit, just so happens to be great timing for him to talk about those 2 things.

Well, had to step out for a lunch meeting and missed it... Not too disappointed since I'm fairly confident that nothing of note was said and MMA as a whole took a small step back...

PostSubject: Re: Why, Rome?   Why, Rome? - Page 2 EmptyThu Jan 21, 2010 4:59 pm

Ninja, this is fighting and not comparable to team sports at all, so I am not going argue that banality anymore.

Fighting isn't the NFL. Fighting isn't MLB. Fighting is as much entertainment as it is sport. There have always been older athletes trying their hand in boxing. The two biggest draws in the UFC are Kimbo Slice and Brock Lesnar, and neither of them are draws for their skills. This is the way it is right now. It won't be this way forever. Accept it.

Strikeforce signing Walker may be a "black eye" in some people's eyes, but you can't argue that doesn't make people discuss STRIKEFORCE the MMA promotion.

I criticized this move at first, but this is all about getting Strikeforce's name associated with fighting, and removing the tag "ultimate fighting" from the sport.

I think in the end, a black eye is worth the clarification of the sports name and identity. It's not like Walker won't eventually be lead to the slaughter anyway...

MMA fans would be well served to accept that some people are not going to like the sport, regardless of what it does. The human cockfighting sports media will continue to parrot that, Walker or not. In fact, it could be argued that a respected athlete such as Walker might make someone take another look at it who otherwise wouldn't. Certainly the sport has merits of its own that might win some new eyes over correct?

Don't underestimate the merits of the sport alone, and don't obsess about 60 year old sports writers who don't even reach MMA's primary audiance anyway and sound like old lamers when they do.

Yet you remember a QB turning a table on a young and immature Rome some 16 years ago? He hasn't done anything in the time since you were 6 to redeem himself such as offer apologies and an olive branch to said QB a hundred times over the years (Who's really the bigger person here)? I know his style is abrassive (Pompous) to some, but remember it's just a shtick for ratings sake. I also find many of the things about his show annoying as hell (The repetitive sound bites are beyong irritating)... But I respect the guy for his ability to interview and his ability to create an empire (Largest audience in sports radio) from nothing that still topples all ESPN shows depite that they are hand fed stations due to ESPN radio. As Rome would say, "You're entitled to your opinion, just know that it's wrong". Wink

Rams QB Jim Everett... Rome insisted on calling him Chris Everett or Chrissy because he was soft. He no longer approves of calling men by a woman's name...lol

Jim Rome's radio show. The entire show is made up of little inside jokes. "The Jungle"(the show itself) and "Clones"(the followers).

Eh, semantics... He had been calling Jim, Chrissy for a couple of years. If you combine all of the versions of the video and added up the views, it might challenge for top-10 on Youtube's most watched. Love or hate the guy, the video is classic and was far from staged as some have suggested...

Like I said, we are all entitled to our opinions...

Funny thing is I wouldn't have respected any athlete who would have let that go. As a kid, Rome was a huge smart ass and thought he was untouchable. I would have done more than toss a table... The fist would have found its mark before the table started moving. But again, Rome admits he was immature and regrets "The Incident" and has offered numerous times to apologize on his radio or TV shows. He's still annoying with that sound bite crap, but for the most part his interviews are entertaining. I listen to Rome and Dan Patrick, and at times stomach my way through Cowherd (Just a shitty interviewer to go along with being a tool) when there's nothing else going...

Hey bird, you know what... From the words of Rome, "At first I didn't like my own show... My wife didn't like my show... Just give the show a listen for two weeks and if at the end of two weeks you still don't like it, I understand... You just aren't that bright and need two more weeks"... lol

I love idiots that whine about fights that are on a free card. This is a business first and foremost for these guys. Who's going to draw more Heiron vs. Riggs or Walker? Same thing happened with Kimbo, now "everyone" is OK with that. Lesnar, Lashley - they haven't collegiately wrestled for 10+ years by the time they got into MMA, Walker has been doing Tae Kwon Do his whole life, whats the difference? He's a couple years older, so we should deny him his want to compete? This will take place ONE time and Walker has said numerous times he trained with AKA and he told them if you think I shouldn't do this just let me know. They told him he can do it and so he's going to go out there. Not to mention he's donating his purse to charity. Guy is a class act and one of the best athletes EVER.
