Almost every big society has done this on some level in history, it's not a matter of should but usually already did or will do eventually.

because back then the thought of citizen militias who were armed was not considered extremists or radical. These men fought for their freedom from British rule. The colonies did not have an organized military like you would think of today. They were the military, the lived it and fought for their freedom.
