- There's only one Ricky Hatton, and the British superstar appears poised for a comeback.
Hatton, who retired after being knocked cold in the second round by Manny Pacquiao in a May 2009 welterweight title fight, is scheduled to make "a major announcement" at a news conference scheduled for Friday in his hometown of Manchester.
It seems obvious that he will be announcing his return to the ring, which has been rumored for months. Hatton, who turns 34 on Oct. 6, has taken to tweeting about his daily workouts and weight loss, and he's in the process of trying to secure a British boxing license.
It doesn't come as much of a surprise. Hatton has stayed close to boxing since retiring. He has worked as a trainer and also has made the effort to beef up his promotional company, which has fallen on hard times since losing its TV deal with Sky Sports. It would seem to me that the TV deal for Hatton's comeback fight -- word in the industry is that it is tentatively slated for Nov. 24 (opponent TBA) -- will be tied to getting his promotional company a new broadcast deal.
Hatton (45-2, 32 KOs), the former junior welterweight champ who also won a welterweight belt, was a huge attraction in England -- on TV and at the gate. And when he began fighting regularly in the United States in 2006, that popularity followed him to America because his fans traveled to his fights by the thousands.
His 10th-round knockout loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in a December 2007 welterweight title fight at the MGM Grand remains the greatest single event I've ever covered in terms of atmosphere. It was like England came to Las Vegas, and the MGM literally ran out of beer. Something like 30,000 Brits made the trip for a fight that seated only about 17,000.
I recently reached out to Paul Speak, one of Hatton's advisers, and asked about the rumored comeback.
Speak didn't issue a denial, simply saying, "There is no official statement from the Hatton organizations."
That statement, I'll bet, will come on Friday. http://espn.go.com/blog/dan-rafael/post/_/id/1835/r-hatton-on-verge-of-unretiring

Hadn't seen a pic, but I was wondering what he would currently be weighing in at. But they don't call him Ricky Fatton for nothing. Big weight gains, and subsequent weight loss are standard procedure for that guy.

I was reading earlier that Ricky's lost something like three stone over the last couple months, maths isn't my strong point so I don't know how many lbs that is but it's alot for a guy his size. |

| Good for Hatton. Real good fighter, and entertaining(at times anyway) just not p4p great. No shame in that.
Keep him away from the pretty boys and prime manny's and he's right there in every fight.
And the time off was probably a good thing. Clear them cobwebs.

- Former two-division titleholder Ricky Hatton, making a comeback 3½ years after he retired, is returning against former welterweight titlist Vyacheslav Senchenko, a far better grade of foe than many expected.
The scheduled 10-round welterweight fight will take place Nov. 24 at the Manchester Arena in Hatton's hometown of Manchester, England.
Hatton's comeback was announced earlier this month but Senchenko, 35, of Ukraine, was unveiled as his opponent at a Friday news conference.
"I can't wait to get in the ring now and I'm sure that Vyacheslav Senchenko will give me a good fight. It's one that I am confident I can win, though," said Hatton, who turns 34 next week.
Hatton (45-2, 32 KOs), the former junior welterweight world champion and a former welterweight titleholder, has not fought since Manny Pacquiao knocked him unconscious in the second round of a welterweight title fight in Las Vegas in May 2009.
Hatton's only other defeat was a 10th-round knockout loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr., also in a welterweight title bout, in December 2007.
Senchenko (32-1, 21 KOs) claimed a version of the 147-pound title in 2009 and made three successful defenses before he was stopped on a cut in the ninth round by Paulie Malignaggi in April in Ukraine.
Hatton stopped Malignaggi in the 11th round of a lineal junior welterweight championship fight in November 2008 in Las Vegas, one bout before Hatton got knocked out by Pacquiao.
"Senchenko lost the last time he fought to Paulie Malignaggi but he has got a good pedigree," Hatton said. "I'm in great shape, I'm feeling good and I know I can put on a performance for all those watching.
"I'm a boxer who loves boxing and loves to box. I'm driven by a hunger to box and look forward to getting back in the ring on the 24th."
Hatton also announced that the undercard will feature an all-British rematch between Scott Quigg (24-0-1, 17 KOs) and Rendell Munroe (24-2-1, 10 KOs) for an interim junior featherweight title. They met June 16 in Manchester for the vacant belt but the fight was ruled a technical draw in the third round when Munroe was unable to continue after suffering a bad cut above his right eye because of an accidental head butt.
Also on the card, Sergey Rabchenko (21-0, 16 KOs) of Belarus will make the first defense of the European junior middleweight title against Cedric Vitu (35-1, 15 KOs) of France; Gary Buckland (26-2, 8 KOs) of Wales will defend the British junior lightweight title against England's Stephen Foster Jr. (30-3-1, 18 KOs); and former middleweight title challenger Martin Murray (24-0-1, 10 KOs), who fought to a draw with then-titleholder Felix Sturm in November, will face an opponent to be determined. http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/8434715/ricky-hatton-fight-former-champ-vyacheslav-senchenko-nov-24 |

- Stephen Espinoza, the Executive Vice President of Showtime Sports, has confirmed to BoxingScene.com that his network is picking up the scheduled return of former champion Ricky Hatton (45-2, 32KOs). On November 24th at the Manchester Arena, Hatton will return against former WBA welterweight champion Vyacheslav Senchenko (32-1, 21KOs)
According to Espinoza, the network will televise the fight live during the day and the broadcast will also be available later that night on a delayed basis. It was also revealed that current WBA welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi will be part of the broadcast team as an expert analyst.
Hatton returns for the first time since a May 2009 knockout loss to Manny Pacquiao. The choice of opponent is logical and outlines the plan for the future. In his last fight, Senchenko lost his title when he was stopped by Malignaggi in nine rounds.
Should Hatton come out victorious next month, Malignaggi has been mentioned as the likely next opponent in the first half of 2013. Hatton previously stopped Malignaggi in the eleventh round of a junior welterweight contest in 2008.
Hatton has several possible paths for next year. Another possible opponent down the line, says Espinoza, is Amir Khan. A fight between Hatton and Khan would be one of the biggest events in the history of the UK. Khan returns to Showtime on December 15th, facing undefeated Carlos Molina.
"You have to give Ricky Hatton a lot of credit, because this is surprisingly a challenging opponent in his comeback fight. And the fact that Ricky chose this guy, shows just how serious he is about getting back into the sport," Espinoza told BoxingScene.com. http://www.boxingscene.com/hatton-senchenko-lands-on-sho-malignaggi-booth--58574 |
