Two UFC champs again are in the running for an ESPY.

Light heavyweight champ Jon Jones and middleweight champ Anderson Silva are among the nominees for "Best Fighter" at the 2012 ESPN Espy Awards. Additionally, MMA fighter Kyle Maynard, who won for "Best Male Athlete with a Disability" at the 2004 awards, was nominated again in the category.

Fans can vote on the winners from now through July 9, and the awards show airs on ESPN on July 11.

Jones and Silva are joined in the "Best Fighter" pool by standout boxers Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Andre Ward.

Maynard, who was nominated this year when he became the first quadruple amputee to reach the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro without assistance, goes up against Baxer Humby, a muay Thai fighter with one arm; Ray Martin, a wheelchair track-and-field athlete; Oz Sanchez, a cyclist; and Tyler Walker, an alpine skier.

Jones previously was nominated for the award in 2011, while Silva drew a nod in 2009.

The "Best Fighter" award thus far has eluded mixed martial artists since the category was created in 2007 to replace the "Best Boxer" category that had been in place since 1993. Since then, Mayweather Jr. has won the honor three times, while Manny Pacquiao has won it twice.

"It's an honor to not only be nominated for the ESPY for Best Fighter, but to also be included in a category with some of the greatest fighters in MMA and boxing history," Jones stated in a press release issued today by his reps.

Past MMA nominees for "Best Fighter" include Georges St-Pierre, Lyoto Machida, Quinton Jackson and Randy Couture.

The ESPY Awards, founded in 1993, honor the best achievements, moments and leading athletes of the previous year. Fan voting for the 33 award categories, including "Best Fighter" and "Best Upset," is open now at the ESPY Awards official website, and the awards ceremony takes place July 11 at Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. The show airs live on ESPN for the second-consecutive year and will be hosted by Rob Riggle of "The Daily Show" fame.

Yeah but who should win and who will win are not related in any way. Money and Pac are the only people to EVER win the award. Popularity. Name recognition. More people know Money then all the rest combined.

Edson Barboza now can add "ESPY Nominee" to his resume.

The UFC lightweight has been nominated in the category of "Best Play" at ESPN's 2012 Espy Awards for his head-kick knockout of Terry Etim at UFC 142 this past January.

ESPN on Friday announced the 16 nominees in the category and opened up voting at ESPN.com.

Voting in the category will take place tournament-style, with 16 seeded candidates. The eight matchups of the first 16 seeds have a voting period between today and Tuesday. The eight winners then advance to the round of eight, which will have voting from July 3-9. Four finalists then get a one-day voting period on July 9 to determine the winner, which is expected to be announced at the July 11 awards show.

Barboza's third-round wheel kick knockout of Etim, which earned him a pair of bonuses at UFC 142 in Rio de Janeiro for both "Knockout of the Night" and "Fight of the Night," is matched up against Louis Oosthuizen and his double-eagle at the Masters this past April. Oosthuizen, from South Africa, hit the rare "albatross" on the second hole of the final round of golf's most famous major tournament and went on to finish second, losing in a playoff.

Barboza (10-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC), who this past month lost for the first time in his career, is not alone as an MMA ESPY nominee. As previously reported, UFC champions Anderson Silva and Jon Jones are nominated in the category of "Best Fighter" against boxers Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Andre Ward. An MMA fighter never has won that category since its inception.

And quadruple amputee Kyle Maynard, who has trained and competed in MMA, is a nominee for "Best Male Athlete With a Disability," an award he won in 2004. He is nominated for becoming the first quadruple amputee to climb to the top of Africa's Mt. Kilimanjaro without assistance.

Along with Silva, Jones and Maynard, Barboza now joins Georges St-Pierre, Lyoto Machida, Quinton "Rampage" Jackson and Randy Couture as MMA fighters nominated for an ESPY.

Aside from the bracket-style "Best Play" category, fans can vote in 33 other categories at the ESPY Awards official website. The awards ceremony takes place July 11 at Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles and airs live on ESPN. The show will be hooted by actor and comedian Rob Riggle.
