| http://mmajunkie.com/news/29905/former-strikeforce-champ-rafael-feijao-cavalcante-to-appeal-suspension.mmaFormer Strikeforce light heavyweight champ Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante (12-3 MMA, 4-2 SF) will appeal his one-year license suspension at the California State Athletic Commission's next meeting on Aug. 8. Cavalcante's manager, Ed Soares, on Friday confirmed the news with MMAjunkie.com ( www.mmajunkie.com). The meeting takes place in Sacramento, Calif. Representing Cavalcante at the appeal will be a drug expert who witnessed the testing of the fighter's "B" sample and a lawyer, Soares said. Cavalcante's camp decided to appeal the suspension after the second test, which was conducted June 26. The CSAC employs the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) test facility at UCLA in Los Angeles for drug testing. The CSAC suspended Cavalcante in mid-June when a pre-fight drug test revealed the presence of stanozolol, a steroid. Cavalcante submitted Mike Kyle in the first round of a May 19 fight at "Strikeforce: Heavyweight Grand Prix Final," which took place May 19 at HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif. The commission overturned the win and fined Cavalcante $2,500. Cavalcante's suspension runs until May 18, 2013, one year from the date he was tested. Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker has said Cavalcante is likely to challenge former champ Gegard Mousasi for the promotion's vacant light heavyweight title when the suspension is up. Cavalcante lost the title to Dan Henderson in March 2011, but rebounded with a second-round knockout of Yoel Romero Palacio. His overall Strikeforce record now stands at 4-2. | |

- Rafael Feijao basically kind of got a little bit of the short end of the stick with this situation where they said that he tested positive, but as you can see, the California State Athletic Commission has obviously had issues with their testing. We believe 100% that Rafael is innocent, and we are staying focused on proving that innocence so he can get back in there, and fight for that Strikeforce title.
As of right now, we have to wait for CSAC to schedule a hearing for us. This happened back in May, so our next opportunity to be able to address this is gonna be in October. It's just a real shame that with everything going on with the commission, from their lack of funding or over-spending, to not following proper procedures on the testing. Everyone can see the holes in their process, and we saw that there were problems in the way that they did their testing before. It's kind of ironic that a few weeks ago, they said the testing they did for Strikeforce San Diego is invalid. If that one was invalid, what makes you think the ones from May 19th weren't invalid, too?

- Former Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champion Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante appeared before the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) earlier today in an attempt to plead his case and get his one year suspension tossed.
Despite a lengthy meeting between "Feijao," his manager Ed Soares and his legal representation which included a question and answer session and testimony from key parties, the commission unanimous voted to deny the Brazilian's appeal and uphold his suspension.
The Blackhouse fighter's defense consisted of an accusation that the chain of custody of his sample had been grossly mishandled. He even argued that the cup for his urine sample had been reused from a prior test. Cavalcante also denied having ever taken steroids.
This wouldn't have been the first time the CSAC had major issues in the drug testing process. The recent Strikeforce: Rousey vs Kaufman results were marred by clerical errors as well.
While "Feijao" seemed to have plead a pretty strong case, with his appeal being denied, he also had his $2,500 fine upheld as well.
Cavalcante will be eligible to compete again on May 18, 2013 following the conclusion of his year-long suspension due to a positive test for stanozolol metabolites following his first round submission victory over Mike Kyle. | |
