| Interest in this is probably limited to Ali, that's if he's even interested, but it was exiting for a few rounds and there was some bizarre officiating to say the least.
Nottinghams McPhilbin was the defending champ in only his 11th fight but was outclassed over 12 rounds, as you'd expect against the former WBO champion, but Maccarinelli was smacked around like a bitch in the early going, surviving a hard knockdown in the 1st and another knockdown in the 3rd from the crude brawler.
The controversy came after the first knockdown however. Maccarinelli was dumped on his back by two hard right hands and though he beat the count, was clearly struggling to stay on his feet and hearing tweetie birds when he was saved by the bell. Trouble was, the bell had been rung 47 seconds too early. A rematch is being mooted but McPhilbins chance has gone imo so i can't really see the point in that unless he gets a nice payment as compensation.
that wasn't the end of the bizarre officiating, on at least three occasions the timekeeper started counting when the referee hadn't called a knockdown and the timekeeping inbetween rounds was also questionable....... leading me to believe he must've been drinking with McPhilbins rowdy fans all night and the ref also called a knockdown for Maccarinelli after he pulled McPhilbin down to his knees in a clinch.
Talent wise, Maccarinelli is several levels above McPhilbin and it's a travesty they were sharing the same ring but even though he eventually took control, this was one of those fights i couldn't take my eyes off as you felt Maccarinelli could be knocked out at any time. The now chinless Welshman really needs to retire as he's lucky not to have been badly hurt by some sickening knockouts since losing his world title to David Haye and was very lucky not to have suffered another one last night against a club fighter. | |
