Because it's sort of a cop out to pick the champion as fighter of the year. The point of picking fighter of the year is to showcase someone who has had good showings throughout the year. Nobody had a better showing against Cruz to date, and he about popped Bowles' head off, on top of outstriking Eddie Wineland earlier this year. Name someone who has done better aside from Dominick Cruz at 135.

Joseph Benavidez - 2-0 with wins over Wineland and Loveland.
Scott Jorgensen - 2-0 with wins over Curran and Stone.
Renan Barao - 2-0 with wins over Escovedo and Pickett.
Eduardo Dantas - 3-0 and won Bellator's BW Tourney.

It's not a cop out if its true. More often than not the champs are fighting the best and beating the best.
