| i actually ended up going to bed shortly after i posted the link.
bloody elbow review said Fedor looked good working some leg kicks, but Monson looked equally horrible and even flopped on his back a few times for Fedor to follow him ala Werdum. That had to look awkward.
I didnt like that they made the fight because Fedor had nothing to gain, but also kept in mind that Fedor is coming off 3 straight losses...i support guys taking a step down in competition for a rebound matchup in the midst of a losing streak.
I hope Fedor breaks away from M-1 after NYE against a guess Iishi(who is a better fight then Monson but not really where Fedor should be right now) to end his career with atleast one UFC fight. Either way, whether Fedor never loses again i don't think he's going to have that many more fights before he retires. I would like to see him having finally signed with the UFC if only to ensure that there won't be any revisionsist history or pretending Fedor never existed because UFC held a grudge. Not that i expect him to continue fighting long enough win or lose to make a huge impact.

I believe he could have finished Monson easily if he would have went for the kill.

He didn't want to go to the ground at all. I think he's hesitant about going to the ground after his last 3 fights.

| I knew Monson had no chance, I was disappointed Fedor didn't go for the win though. He was too tentative and looked to almost be afraid to go to the ground. | |

| It was a pretty terrible display on both sides. I think I counted less than 5 strikes thrown by Monson in 3 rounds. Fedor looked fucking terrified of being on the ground with Monson, even if he was on top of the guy. | |

| source: http://www.championat.com/boxing/_mma/news-997349-emeljanenko-ja-ne-khotel-riskovat.html"I did not want to take a risk, because Jeff --- he is not a simple fighter. I did not go to finish him because Monson is very dangerous on the ground and could use any mistake I can make. I worked very diligently so that I don't allow a transition on the ground against me. A leg shot (takedown) can be done at any moment. It would have been enough to make even the smallest incorrect movement (and lose). I am accepting things as they are. If we receive challenges -- then it must be that way. For me, my losses are just as valuable as my wins -- may be even more valuable. Its good that I managed to win." On the question what he will do next, Fedor said: "Now, I will return to Stary Oskol and in the near future will spend time with my family." If this is true he completely lacks confidence in his ground game and needs to retire. | |

| Yeah he's broken mentally as a fighter right now it seems. This is the same guy who went to the ground with Minotauro Nogueira, who stood and struck with Mirko Cro Cop. He's gone from fearless and ultra confident in his own abilities to skittish of going to the ground with Jeff Monson. Time to hang 'em up. | |

| Fedor used to be a very confident grappler who could hang with anybody on the ground. I think what happened was he abandoned the judo and control aspect of MMA in his training and simply focused on striking the past couple years. Gus striking has greatly improved from the PRIDE days, while he grappling has deteriorated.
Monson is not a joke on the ground guys...even at his advanced age or lack of mobility..he still placed at ADCC this year. Nobody was getting mad at Cormier for not taking Monson down or following him to the ground when Monson did end up on his back. Fedor was going to null any advantage Jeff might have. Fact is, Fedor lost to Werdum because he followed him to the ground, he lost to Bigfoot because he was dominated on the ground, and he rushed a rocked Henderson to the ground and got reversed and knocked out. I understand the PTSD in a fight where his opponents only possible advantage in the fight was grappling. I'll give him more than one fight to get his confidence back in his top game...hopefully they been working on it.
I do want Fedor to retire..i wanted him to retire after the Bigfoot fight. Perfect fight to go out on your shield on...but he can still go and at a high level...so i don't think he HAS to retire. He just needs to quit being a slugger and go back to being a mixed martial artist. He was great at that.

| Monson didn't place this year. In the 99+ kg division Monson won his first round fight on points, then got submitted in the quarterfinals by Werdum. In the absolute he lost by DQ in his first fight to Xande Ribeiro. In 2009 he placed 3rd in the 99+ kg Monson is not good off of his back, he is no where near as dangerous as Werdum is in that position. | |

| i thought he had placed, my mistake...and i never came close to suggesting he was anywhere near Werdum off his back or in general so your reminder was not needed. However, Monson was clearly confident enough in grappling off his back to attempt to bait Fedor to get on top of him and Fedor has struggled in that department as of late. No point in giving in to where Monson wants the fight when he is unable to get the fight away from where Fedor wants it. | |

| Nobody got on Cormier because the guy has far less submission grappling experience, and fought Monson in only his eighth MMA fight ever. Cormier also wanted to make a point of showcasing his improved striking. Fedor has competed in Sambo competitions for the better part of the last ten years, had thirty six fights prior to fighting Monson, and had long established his striking abilities. Fact is Fedor fought as though he was terrified to follow Monson to the ground. I've never seen him throw so many leg kicks either. He was clearly worried about Monson mounting any kind of offense at all and wanted to be as far away from him at all times. | |

can we commend him for actually following a game plan for once?

| The kind of gameplan he fought with was the kind of gameplan someone with an inferior ground game would fight with. I can appreciate following a gameplan but Fedor shouldn't be avoiding the ground at all costs against someone who's takedowns are as weak as Monson's at this point. | |
