| He was in the league for 60 years. That is a long time. People will focus on his modern struggles too much. | |

60 years, damn! I didn't know he was in the league that long and I didn't know he had 3 superbowl rings either. You're right though, people will only remember the batshit crazy Al Davis. That's all I knew until I saw the news on his death on ESPN this morning. I hate to say it but It's a great day to be a Raiders fan. Davis single handedly held that franchise down for my adult life.

| I am as big of a Raider Hater as anybody out there and over the past several years i have found Davis as a huge detriment to the Raiders progress. The bay area media here have treated Davis like a joke the past 10 years or so...and amazingly always talked about how things would be when Davis finally croaked and i always found that wrong.
However, you can't doubt how remarkable the mans career was..on the NFL network they were discussing if the NFL were to make a Mt. Rushmore you could make a really strong case for Al Davis being on that...i agree. The man was a 100% genius for several years and like many people in his position, did not want to let go of the operations with the actual product on the field long after he lost his ability to build a great team. Now that he is gone, people will reflect and see how great of an impact Al Davis had on the NFL...he was in the game for 60 years and did everything he could have done...coached, ran the league, built his way up from a small time to big time, won superbowls, HoF, had an incredible eye for talent, etc. Now that it's over and he is no longer actively drafting Derrius Heyward Bey's in the top 10 people will now remember Al Davis the genius, not Al Davis the old man who won't let go.

| Rest in Peace Al Davis.
Struggles of the present do not erase how much Al meant to football as we know it today. Nobody defines the term icon and pioneer in regards to professional football more than Al. There will never be another figure as influential on the sport again.
