Sonnen vs Stann for UFC 136

dont know if this has been posted yet but mmaweekly,junkie and bloody elbow are all reporting stann vs sonnen. imo this a good #1 contenders match. i got sonnen, stann hits hard and is no slouch on the ground but dont think he is at the level of wrestling as chael or the bjj to submit him.

I saw this coming, great fight to be made and a definite number 1 contenders match. hope Stann can stop the takedown tho, he should be better than Chael standing

That is a good fight, but I am a little dissapointed I know the whole Machida talk was just to mess with Anderson, but I liked the idea of it, Stann has better stand up, but so does Anderson Silva and Sonnen was holding his own there, and it didn't stop him from taking it to the ground.

this is a horrible matchup for Brain Stann. If your only chance at beating Sonnen is via TKO...you have pretty much no chance at all. I doubt we'll see Stann pull off a sub and no chance he takes a decision. We'll see if he can keep Sonnen vertical long enough to land enough shots to break Sonnen's threshold of pain. Bad matchup all around...major major upset if Stann wins. Oddly enough, Jorge Santiago is a more threatening matchup for Sonnen cuz of the jitz. Who knows, maybe Stann has a few tricks...it does not take an ace to tap Sonnen.

Sonnen via unanimously unanimous decision.

As MMAjunkie.com reported on Wednesday, Sonnen and Stann have agreed to meet at UFC 136, which takes place Oct. 8 in Houston.


Today, noted oddsmaker Joey Oddessa told MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio) he's opened the line with Sonnen as a -215 favorite and Stann a +175 underdog.


That puts Sonnen as a better than 2-to-1 favorite.

I am rooting for Sonnen, just because it amps up the entertainment value...

With his wrestling he should be the favorite.

This is the worst fight Joe Silva has booked in years. What the fuck is the UFC thinking? This fight booking is horribly wrong on about 200,000,000 levels -

1. It destroys Stann as a contender just as he was really gaining momentum as he has no chance here as most MW’s without wrestling pedigrees have no chance to block Sonnen’s takedowns.

2. It either destroys Sonnen as a fan favorite by making him attack military men etc, or more likely it completely wastes Chael’s talents as Stann’s square-jawed red blooded American Anglophile aura is right up Sonnen’s ally and Stann is the kind of person Sonnen would respect deeply. There is no way to sell this fight. If Sonnen does sell this fight, it alienates a good chunk of his fanbase in the process.

Chael needs to be fighting Brazilians he can tiptoe politically correct lines with and Stann needs to fight someone like Aaron Simpson or Mark Munoz before he takes on the best takedown guy in MMA this side of GSP. Pedigree or no pedigree, in MMA wrestling terms Sonnen is way ahead of Munoz or Simpson. After seeing what Davis did, this fight makes no fucking sense at all.

This is an OK match up from a strictly fan perspective in that at least the UFC is saying "well fuck long term PPV strategies lets just throw random top ten guys together and see what happens", but I’d honestly rather see each given good fights and challenge for the title right after the other. The only way I am interested is if one or the other becomes champion. From a business perspective, I can’t see this fight making even an iota of sense.
