For now, UFC lightweight champ Frankie Edgar has a leg up on Gray Maynard – in the recovery room.

Edgar has been cleared to fight and is ready to compete in October, manager Ali Abdel-Aziz today told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com).

Maynard, meanwhile, has yet to receive the all-clear to begin a camp that would prepare him for a highly anticipated rematch with the lightweight champ.

"Right now, we're still waiting for him to be cleared by the doctor," said Gil Martinez, Maynard's boxing coach. "Hopefully, it happens this week."

Maynard underwent arthroscopic surgery on his knee this past May after Edgar withdrew from their scheduled fight at UFC 130 with an injury to his back. In subsequent interviews, Maynard said he suffered his injury in training while Edgar's back problems had continually dogged him.

Edgar, though, has since gotten back in the gym while Maynard has not.

"Once we get him back into the gym and we know everything is good, then we will move forward and start looking for the date," Martinez said.

Edgar and Maynard fought to a split draw this past January at UFC 125 in a fight considered by many to be an early candidate for "Fight of the Year." Edgar was nearly knocked out in the first round but came back to even out the scorecards. Maynard believed he had done enough to win the fight but admitted to running low on gas in later rounds.

UFC president Dana White initially put down the idea of an immediate rematch but later changed his mind – to Maynard's great relief – and booked the UFC 130 match.

"The Bully" holds a win over Edgar from three years ago at UFC Fight Night 13.
