Anthony Pettis Will Fight Again Instead of Waiting for Edgar or Maynard

The draw between Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard at UFC 125 will mean a trilogy between the two lightweight competitors will happen in 2011, but it also means the last WEC champion Anthony Pettis is left out of the title picture for the time being.

Now it appears Pettis will not be waiting around for a title shot, and will fight again before looking to challenge Edgar or Maynard.

Mike Roberts of MMA Inc., Pettis’ management company, told MMAWeekly.com on Friday that Pettis would be returning to the cage instead of sitting out for nearly a year to wait for a title shot.

“Anthony was obviously disappointed in not getting the title shot but he also understands why Dana made that decision” Roberts said. “After consulting with Anthony and Duke Roufus, we collectively decided that it would be in Anthony’s best interest to take a fight in the meantime.

“A 10 month or possible year layoff was just too long. We believe with a win against a top lightweight contender Anthony will still get the title shot later in the year”.

Pettis defeated Ben Henderson at WEC 53 to close out that promotion in December, and was slated to face the winner of Edgar and Maynard, but a draw put that on hold.

Pettis will look to return to the cage, likely in the first half of 2011, to keep busy and look to challenge either Edgar or Maynard if he can stay on a winning path.

No, too tough of a fight for him. You want someone with some name value that he can beat. Give him Guida.

i'd rather he lose to Miller and not get a shot than beating Guida and having an easier route to the title

Give him Miller, Florian, Aussie George, Evan Dunham, etc. He has to fight half of them at some point anyway if he wins the title right? Let him fight one of them now.

Dunham vs Gulliard winner.
Guida or Sherk - though I'd rather Sherk and Guida fight eachother.
Florian if he is healthy would be good to.

I'd let Miller fight Shamalurs so if he and Soto win that will set up a great #1 contender fight.

+1. They still want to introduce to him to people who didn't watch the WEC all that much as this exciting 23 year old bad ass. No need for a fight with someone like Miller right now when he's just trying to get a win to stay active and keep that title shot

Mixed feelings, stays fresher, but takes a risk. Guida would probably be a less dangerous choice for an opponent, curious who they'll pick for him.

I think u guys are under-estimating Guida. He isnt a push over for any1 especially Pettis.

Miller vs Pettis would be a very good scrap.
