http://www.mmamania.com/2011/7/6/2262274/bj-penn-get-rid-of-belts-judges-and-decision-wins-video "I definitely think the way to make it exciting, get rid of the belts, get rid of the judges, first thing right off the bat. Any fight that goes to a decision should be an automatic draw. No decisions. The only way you can win a fight is by finishing your guy ... You put all the guys with the most wins at the top of the pay scale ... No one will want to go to decision. Then you'll really find out who the best is."

Yeah I saw this last week and it is radical but also would be really interesting if things worked that way. So much incentive to finish.

This. BJ talks as much crap as Sonnen but at least Sonnen is only joking around. Penn is actually serious.

How does Penn talk as much crap as Sonnen? And why do you guys think judges are a better method then letting fighters decide who wins a fight by actually winning the fight?

No belts? Fights that go to decision are draws? The UFC would lose 50% of their viewers in 1 PPV.

Or fighters would shake the trend of fighting not to lose because not finishing effects their earnings. It's one of those ideas that makes way to much sense to ever be implemented in a show like this. Dudes would be doinbg everything they can to finish. No Judges fouling up decisions for finish wary fighters.

I don't see why the belts have to go? You can still keep those and have finishes only. Except who wants to wait 3 hours for Fitch vs Askren to pass out from exhaustion?

I don't even understand the "no belts" part. What the hell is that supposed to be do? The whole idea is obviously stupid, but that part stands out

Yeah the no belts part is not needed. But no judges and incentive for finishing, come on, what does everybody here cry non stop about all the time?

They would draw and get paid much less for doing so.

So GSP vs Koscheck would be a draw?
In other news-
NBA games will now be decided by the first team that makes 20 dunks a game and golf by whoever does the most hole in ones.

Too much reward for guys who have natural punching power and a lot of other factors. Sam Stout brings it every single time, yet had nothing but decisions for as long as I can remember until that Yves fight. He shouldn't be penalized just because he's a great striker but doesn't really have one punch putout power. There's too many outliers here for that to be effective and it would get old fast

LOL come on, that is a team sport. Also why was the shot clock invented? So teams couldn't just pass the ball around all game and get the win.

They still play to a clock though and whoever has the most points wins. It's just like whoever scores better in a fight. The UFC should be able to have it's own judges.

They made rules in basketball to prevent the lay and pray techniques. You have the lane violations so the tall guys can't just camp out under there and you have the shot clocks so you can't waste out all the time. But again that is a team sport and really not comparable to MMA. In basketball you can't have a huge lead disappear in 1 shot, in MMA you can. The only way to win in basketball is to have more points then the other team. You can lose 4 rounds 10-7 and still score a KO in the 5th and become Champion...unless you use the Chael Sonnen logic.

I like the direction, but it isn't perfect. I still think my idea is the best without getting all radical, along with breeding a more consistently competent pool of judges.

Here is my formula.
All fights change, not just main events, except for Championship fights, they remain the same.
All fights are 4 rounds, 4 minutes each. 16 minutes to a decision.
If a fight is scored a Draw or Split Decision, it goes to a 4 minute OT round where a winner must be declared, meaning even if there is a point deduction draw scenario, a winner must still be named. 20 total minutes in that scenario. Only a 3-1 or 4-0 unanimous decision would end a fight without an overtime round.
Take this formula and add in the clause that a finish automatically adds an X-multiplyer to the pay scale, and Ii mean significant.
