Helio Gracie vs Masahiko Kimura - You really dont believe that myth about the Gracies being undefeated for 3,000 years until Sakuraba came around. Do you?If you do then sorry I dont want to ruin it for you, keep on moving people, nothing to see here. In mythical land Helio defeated all brazilian comers and then tamed Godzilla, in actual life he was a tough SOB that became known for his Gracie Jiu Jiutsu. Kimura was basically and probably the best judokan of all time. No bullshit. In 1951 Helio and Masahiko came to fight each other in Brazil in a BJJ vs Judo match. Helio was the underdog and for good reason, it was obvious from the get go that Kimura was going to throw Gracie around like a rag doll. Alot of rumors remain to this day basically saying the mat was extremely soft because they knew Gracie would be taking slams. 13 minutes into the bout Kimura locked in a reverse-ude-garami and ended up forcing Helio's arm out of the socket. The fight was stopped and the reverse-ude-garami would forever be known as the Kimura.

Antonio Inoki vs Wilhelm Ruska - 1971 - This one is legendary for the backstory more so than the actual fight. Inoki was the most famous pro wrestler in Japan, this honestly feels stupid jsut typing, but he attempted to takeover the biggest Japanese Wrestling organization in a power move and long story short, lost and was barred from the organization. With no where to go he decided to fight in mixed martial arts matches. He challenged the Judo Gold Medalist from the Munich Olympics. Wilhelm Ruska, the fight was very one sided and ended with Inoki nailing Ruska with 3 belly to back suplexes. Some wonder if this fight was a fix but it happened none the less.

Another famous NHB match to take place was when ...

Antonio Inoki fought Muhammad Ali in Japan. Basically the Japanese kind of pulled a quick one on "the greatest", Ali was originally told he would be paid 6 million for a worked wrestling match. This is where the story gets foggy, there are 2 versions of what happened next. 3 days before the match was to take place when Ali arrived in Japan, he asked Inoki when the rehearsal was, Inoki responded this is a real fight. It apparently dawned on Ali and his camp that Inoki was not throwing a fight.

The other version is that Ali agreed to take the 6 million to lose to Inoki in a worked match and changed his mind when he got to Tokyo.

Whatever happened, one thing is for sure, several days before the fight Inoki and Ali's camps began remaking the rules, Ali would wear 4 oz. gloves, Inoki would wear none, Inoki could not tackle or throw and had to have 1 knee down to throw kicks. (tend to believe the Ali came and didnt realize it was a real fight story).

Add it all together and what you get is one of the weirdest spectacles in MMA/NHB history, no small feat. Freddie Perchaco summed up the situation well : Ali's fight in Tokyo was basically a Bob Arum thought-up scam that was going to be 'ha-ha, ho-ho. We're going to go over there. It's going to be orchestrated. It's going to be a lot of fun and it's just a joke.' Well, when we got over there, we found out no one was laughing."
Ali, never one at a loss for words, famously said, "whats karate from a distance?"

When the fight actually happened, it was a awful, Inoki spent the first 6 rounds on his back chasing Ali and peppering Ali with kicks, Ali threw his first punch in the 7th round. For the record, his 2nd punch came in the 10, and he threw 2 in the 13th. Inoki never got up he just laid safely on his back (no punches to a downed fighter) and Ali's legs actually ended up bleeding. The fight ended in a draw and the crowd was pissed at what they had just seen. Ali threw 6 punches in 15 rounds.

Up next we have the pissing contest between Rickson Gracie and Hugo Duarte - Basically Hugo had been telling anyone that would listen that he was the real best martial artist in all of Brazil and that he would own the Gracie's. Long story short, Rickson Gracie pimp smacks Duarte on a beach and a beach brawl ensues between the two at the height of their powers. The "fight" ends with Duarte having to basically scream Uncle with Rickson on top reigning blows on his face.

more to come
