"Sons of Anarchy" fans are still reeling from the death of a key character in Tuesday's (Sept. 25) episode, "Laying Pipe." Series creator Kurt Sutter talked with reporters Wednesday morning about why he chose to kill off the character and how it will affect Jax (Charlie Hunnam) going forward.

(Spoilers for "Laying Pipe" below.)

Sutter says the events leading to Opie's (Ryan Hurst) death -- at the direct hands of other prison inmates, but at the behest of Damon Pope (Harold Perrineau) -- stretch back as far as the end of Season 3, "and it all sort of came together with the death of Piney [William Lucking] last year. We got to the end of that season and I felt there was this circular dynamic happening with Jax and Opie that I felt was very difficult to get out of. ...

"Knowing where I want to take my hero and the road I want him to travel, Jax I felt needed that emotional upheaval, that one event that happens in a man's life that can change the course of his destiny. I think the death of his best friend was that event."

Sutter also says he put Opie dying early in the season so viewers will be able to see what it does to Jax.

"This is the season where Jax ... really figures out what kind of man he's going to become, and we see the decisions he makes and what kind of leader he's going to be," Sutter says. "Laying these circumstances out early in the season really allows that death to color Jax and all the choices he makes. ... Jax will be greatly influenced by the death of Opie, and that loss and emptiness will color him throughout the rest of the season."

Pope offers Jax a deal to get out of jail, provided he sacrifices someone else from SAMCRO as payback for Tig's (Kim Coates) killing of a cop on Pope's payroll and another man in the Season 5 premiere. Jax is on the verge of making that choice -- or offering himself up -- when Opie steps in.

Sutter says he wanted Opie to die "as a warrior," but it also gave him a way to exit a life he had no love for anymore.

"To me, there is a sense of him having this tremendous loss," Sutter says. "And yes, I do believe some of it was a sense of, 'Here's an opportunity for me to go out doing the right thing and perhaps this is how I can best be of service to my club.'"

PS: I also want to add that I don't think I've ever been traumatized from watching TV shows or films before. This was pretty damn close for some reason. It's the way Opie looked at Jax one last time before the death blow that was chilling man. That was heavy. Very tough to digest seeing your best friend go out like that. Might be right Toxic. Jax may turn into a cold, callous and distant leader.

Only way they could do it, been building since Tig killed Donna, that last look although hard to watch was easier for me, cause Ope knew he was free, we are going to see a whole new side of Jax for the rest of the seasonaa and maybe the following 2 seasons, Pope will die is my bold prediction, when Jax told the guard I will find out your name, I will find out where you live, and I will kill you, that dude knew he fucked up

Yeah I think Jax is going to be pretty ruthless this season. People will pay. I just really hope Clay gets his eventually. It's just not right that he is alive and Oppie was beaten to death.

After doing a great job with some pretty graphic and emotional scenes so far this season, I think they could have done better with Oppie's funeral. They did an OK job but it wasn't on the same level as other scenes so far this season and it could have been. Especially the impact they are implying that Oppie's death will have on Jax and the entire show. Jax's last look was a look of a man that has been pushed too far.
Gemma's character is becoming very annoying and easy to hate. She just causes shit with everyone. Attention whore/control freak and all she does is start shit. I really hope Nero knocks her down a peg or two. Maybe she needs her head bounced off the floor a few more times before she learns to stop being a bitch.

SOA is getting good boy! Jax is starting to be the Jax I've always wanted him to be in this show, him not even flinching when Tig killed that guards wife and giving the nod then handling the guard himself was great. I was def shocked at the car wreck in the last episode and can't wait for the explanation of Gemma falling asleep.

Plus we might finally see Juice and Clay get what they deserve. Sweet

Yeah it was an awesome episode. I don't think Clay gets his yet but I'm hoping Juice is the one they execute next episode. He deserves it for what happened last season. But I hope he rats out Clay before they kill him. I fucking hate Jemma and I hope she is dead, but I know she won't be.
They really make us think the older son is dead since he isn't making any noise while the younger son is crying and we see the blood dripping at the end. I can' imagine what that will do to Jax right now.
Next episode should be a good one. I was shocked Clay didn't shoot Unser or Unser didn't try to shoot Clay.

Gemma is a dumb fucking whore on the show. She does nothing but make dumb decisions. I don't think just because he is married to Sutter means she won't die at some point. Hopefully she does and it's painfully.

It looked like Unser knew Clay was involved with the break ins by the way he responded to Clay saying "there is one still out there so watch your back". I think he is about 95% sure in his own mind that Clay is still the one responsible. But Clay had the same opportunity to shoot Unser and didn't. Unser would have alot of explaining to do if he killed Clay and you have to been beyond 100% sure to do something like that. I don't think Unser was fooled, just cautious.

Another great episode. Jax is a ruthless mother fucker since Oppie died. I was extremely worried they were going to kill Chibbs. He could actually still be dead, I really hope he isn't.

OK Jax is now that dude I wanted him to be and I'm loving it. And I hope your right about Gemma not being unkillable cause I'm really getting sick of her character. And the way Nero defends her is equally sickening and it stains an otherwise fucking sweet character.

I LOVED how they setup the Jax-Jemma scene at the end. They did an amazing job with that IMO.
I have a theory that Jax will get Nero to attempt to kill Clay. He told Nero that Jemma was his problem and then goes on to push Clay and Jemma together. I think Jax will get Clay to attack Jemma again and Nero will come in with his Captian Save a Hoe and go after Clay.

I disagree. I'm not convinced Juice dies. I think it's possible that Jax catches up with Juice and Juice tells Jax about Clay. Now Jax can spare Juices life so he can tell the club what Clay told him. I think that is what Jax will TRY to do. But I have a feeling Clay will end up killing Juice before he gets a chance to tell the club. Then Jax will tell the club that Juice was a rat and that is why Clay killed him.
I'm not convinced Clay will buy the Jemma act. I think he could give her false information to throw of Jax.
How weird was it that Tara was getting off on the idea of Otto getting off?

My prediction on how the Juice situation plays out. I think Jax confronts Juice alone. Juice confesses but also gives up info on Clay. Jax will then want to keep Juice alive to tell the club about Clay, probably in exchange for keeping quite on Juice being a rat. However I think Clay kills Juice before that information can get out, forcing Jax to tell the club that Clay killed Juice for being a rat and yet again not having the info needed to put Clay on blast to the club.
I think Clay outsmarts Jemma and eventually feeds her false information that will backfire on Jax. I think Jemma having feelings for Nero will make her transparent to Clay.

Holy shit! This has been an amazing season. I should have saw some of this coming. Weird having an entire episode without Nero. But that might have been the best episode this season. I couldn't stop saying "wow" for the majority of the episode.

Good call on the Juice situation OU, and hell ya that episode was dope.

I didn't expect this episode to play out like that. I didn't expect Clay to be brought to the table so early.
I guess this is one way for Clay to remain alive for next season. Clay is making a run at Tig and seems like he is also trying to get Juice to come along.
But whether it happens in the finale, in next seasons premier or sometime in next season, I think I Nero will be the one to kill Clay. I mentioned that before. Just makes sense with the conversation Pope and Jax had. I think Jemma will be used to justify Nero killing Clay. The club would probably understand if Nero killed Clay over something to do with Jemma since Clay is no longer a member and considered a traitor at this point.
The sure made it seem like Jax was giving up Tig, not just preview but the conversation Jax had with Pope. I don't know how Jax is going to justify this one to the club though. Also it looks like that Marshall guy is going to go on some kind of killing spree. We could have some dead Sons at the end of next episode. I'm just really hoping Chibbs isn't one of those Sons.

This season as been super good minus the shedude scene. Bobby fucked everything up, whoever gets killed by the irish its on him. As far as Tig, I don't think there is any doubt Jax is gonna give him to Pope but your right I have no idea how that sits with the club. Can't wait for next week. What do you think? Does Tara go to the pen and become the clubs new Otto? lol

Well that new Marshall character is a big ? right now. He looked like he was ready to ride out on some people with that arsenal he had laid out in his room. Who is he going to go after?
I have thought Tara was going to die in past, she has had some close calls. How about what Jax did to Wendy? I don't know why but I just didn't expect that.

The wendy shit I did actually see coming as soon as she threatened Jax, I didn't know what he was going to do I thought he'd just kill her but I knew something was gonna happen to her as soon as she grew balls to talk shit.
