http://mmaweekly.com/maurcio-shogun-rua-says-quinton-rampage-jackson-was-offered-title-shot-turned-it-down

Quote :
According to Rua in an interview with Tatame.TV, former UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson was offered the shot at the belt, but turned it down and the UFC instead turned to Jon Jones.

“The UFC thought in other alternatives, but it didn’t work out. For some reason he (Jackson) didn’t accept it,” Rua said in the interview.

Jackson is currently slated to face Thiago Silva at UFC 130 on May 28, but apparently opted not to move his schedule up six weeks to face Rua for the belt.

Shogun and Jackson have faced off before. The pair met while in Pride Fighting Championships, and it ended with Shogun soccer kicking his way to victory.

Jackson has yet to make a statement about the validity of Rua’s claims or if the timing was just off for him to accept a bout against the Brazilian at this time.

Regardless of Jackson’s decision, Jon Jones will now get the chance to face Rua with the UFC light heavyweight title on the line at UFC 128 in March.

Interesting. I guess maybe he wants to be prepared. Could weight be an issue? I know he has made some pretty big cuts before, maybe the timing just isn't right.

Translation- Rampage isn't in good enough shape to fight that soon, he probably hasn't even started training yet

Yep, he hasn't started training yet I don't believe. He was talking to some guy from Golden Glory on his Twitter not too long ago about training out there for his next fight but said he still had a while to go before starting camp

I'm sure he wants the Title shot, but not on short notice unprepared, he may get one by simply beating Thiago where he could prepare properly for it afterwards.

It is, but with 6 weeks to train and Dana already having said Page could get next shot after beating Thiago, I have no prob with the decision.

If somebody battered me as efficiently as Shogun battered Rampage, i would turn down a rematch as well.

Yeah i dont have a problem with his decision but it makes me think how many times can u turn title shots down before they simply quit offering?

yeah I was going to say that Page does like to pack on the pounds in between fights.

So even 6 weeks, which is not really short notice, is short notice for Page.

especially on 6 weeks notice when you have the training regimen of Rampage. Thats a nightmare not a reality. not surprised he turned it down at all when after beating Silva he will likely get a title shot.

Rampage wrote:
"I don't care who the opponent is. I'm not taking a fight on four weeks' notice. It's not enough time to get ready for a five-round fight. Dana knows that. And 'Shogun,' he's a fighter, and he should know that. He shouldn't even go and say [expletive] like that with him being a fighter. He saw me at the fight this weekend. Everybody saw how big I am."

"I'm just doing maintenance training right now. I just started back. I fought right before the holidays, and I went on vacation to see my family and took my kids to see their family in Japan. I've been living my life, so I gained a lot of weight. I'm a natural fighter. I don't do any drugs, and I don't know any high-performance drugs, so I have a natural body. My body gains weight when I don't train and I don't eat like I'm in camp."

"I'm 250 pounds, and I would have to lose 45 pounds in, what, three or four weeks? The first time I fought 'Shogun,' I was injured going into that fight, and it's haunted me all the way up to now. I always believed the second time I fight 'Shogun' that I'm going to be close to 100 percent as possible... I don't want to have a rushed camp and have a last-minute fight to fight someone who's already beaten me. Even if they offered me Forrest (Griffin) or Rashad (Evans) in four weeks, I can't take that fight because I'm too big."

I think it's smart. I really don't know if Jon Jones should be fighting Shogun without a full 8 week training camp, even if he is in shape already.
