SF cuts Riggs and Villasenor

Strikeforce, which didn't sign Gerald Harris because it's focusing on the roster it currently has, recently parted ways with MMA veterans "Smokin'" Joe Villasenor and Joe "Diesel" Riggs, according to Five Ounces of Pain.

weird, Villasenor had some good fights for them

Doesn't seem like SF should be cutting anyone like that unless there are some new $ issues (HW's).

I heard Joey opted out of his deal.


Was more surprised with Riggs, who finished his opponent, as the main event of a challengers card, in his last go with SF

And he's 28.

Seemed like a guy worth keeping.

Who are the high profile guys? Harris and Duffee?

SF even if it holds 20 events a year as hoped for, will still have too many guys grumbling about lack of work.

they are eliminating the WW division, soon Nick will be going to the UFC.

they just got rid of J. Heiron as well

They grew tremendously in the previous 14 month period. A little too big actually. Guys are grumbling.

But they are still signing guys, ala Daley, Barnett.

Now Heiron would probably wrestle Daley up fairly easy. It's likely his wrestling would give Diaz problems But SF would rather have Daley.

Much like in the Shields situation, they are not putting high stock into talented but not so entertaining guys. Heiron def fit that bill.

they'd rather role with cyborg, then villasenor, even though Joey won when they met in the SF cage, (managing to do so in not so thrilling fashion(he is a Greg Jackson guy now after all)) because Cyborg makes for more interesting fights.


But like I said I think Joey opted out of his contract, probably due to inactivity, and possibly to chase the 100K in Bellator.

Rigg's maybe a similar situation.

This is business as usual for SF. They sign and release guys as needed. This isn't a cut in the same sense as UFC cuts usually are. They are not the same as the UFC and they don't always act the same. These guys could easily be back inside the Strikeforce cage soon.

Not suprised with Joey, though i like him. He got dominated by Dinillo Villefort at Shark Fights.

Joe Riggs being cut is pretty puzzling.
