StrikeForce's Heavyweight Mess Empty
PostSubject: StrikeForce's Heavyweight Mess   StrikeForce's Heavyweight Mess EmptyTue Nov 30, 2010 12:58 am

Is it possibly the best Heavyweight Division of any MMA organization? Possibly
Do they have the most decorated Heavyweight in the business? Yes
Do they have a Champion? Yes

Who is the MAN in the Division?
This is where problems arise. Is it Werdum, the guy that beat Fedor? Overeem the guy that beat....Brett Rogers? Its still Fedor, Werdum was a fluke. Thats the problem, ask 3 people and you may get 3 different answers. They have great fighters, they just haven't been able to put the defining fight together that will let the public know who the legit man is in their division. Seriously, their own commentating staff was calling Fedor the best fighter in the world, while trying to tote Overeem as their champion. Does that seem condescending to anyone else?

Not confusing enough for ya? Well there's this guy named Big Foot who gave Werdum a fight and beat an old Andrei Arlovski walking around. Oh ya, good news, Josh Barnett's been added into the mess, I mean mix as well. Which will add a serious threat to the top of the division if he ever passes a steroids test.

So basically StrikeForce has 3 guys that could be considered top dog in the division in Overeem, Werdum, and Fedor.
Then add in Antonio Silva and Josh Barnett into the discussion and you have a pretty damn good division.

So whats the problem?

Of those 5 talented fighters with endless combinations of great fights to be made, only 2 have taken place.
Fedor vs Werdum and Antonio Silva vs Fabricio Werdum
StrikeForce simply does not seem to know how to put the pieces of the puzzle together to make a star and generate a ton of money. Seriously lets look at the situation in the division.

Fedor - seemingly out for a couple months, wants a Werdum rematch no wants Overeem who the hell knows
Werdum - milking the Fedor win and out for a couple months
Overeem - seems more interested in K-1 than defending against a legit threat.
Antonio Silva- getting ready to fight Mike Kyle (filling in for Reem's brother)
Josh Barnett - who know's probably trying to learn how to do a proper steroid cycle

This should make for an interesting sorting out process, but I am beginning to doubt we will ever see one. Hopefully we will because it will be great for StrikeForce, MMA, and the fans.

To make my point, what does your StrikeForce Heavyweight Top 3 List look like

1. Werdum
2. Fedor
3. Overeem

Yeah, and a lil of what I was knocking SF for on only having a handful of HW fights in 2010. It's a real debacle. Every event with HW fights being wasted by not happening hurts, if it doesn't change soon and they can't get some traction in their match making, it could become fatal.

In my opinion based on who beats who-

1. Fedor Emelianenko
2. Alistair Overeem
3. Josh Barnett
4. Fabricio Werdum
5. Antonio Silva

Based on current Rankings-

1. Fabricio Werdum
2. Fedor Emelianenko
3. Alistair Overeem
4. Antonio Silva
5. Brett Rogers/Josh Barnett

SF needs Fedor to get revenge fast, but with all the "tuneup fight" talk we know that wouldn't happen. The longer it takes to right that wrong the more it will hurt the org imo.

If their heavyweights were fighting regularly that would give the Strikeforce brand a huge boost.

I think this says it all. Except that I'd include a bunch of guys in the "if he ain't fighting he ain't shit" category. Too many names on there roster to not have a big time hwy matchup on every card. Yet we get Silva vs the .500 Reem.

And while I do blame the fighters to some extent, SF is to blame as well. Why was Rogers not in there vs Big Foot originally? and why is Lavar fighting a lhwy we've never heard of? Where is Sergei? I think they are trying to build these guys up, but by matching them with lower level guys, they are only drawing the ire of the core MMA fan base.
