It's very likely that sony and microsoft will remove retail from the equation by 2014. All purchases will be online and unique to the one username.

Yeah that's pretty lame. Hopefully they will still allow me to put them on my flash drive like they do now with games I download.

We're heading to a full digital system which will cut down on costs for the software and cases and whatnot. However places like Gamestop will go out of business aside from hardware sales.

The game makers yes. Without having the overhead of a warehouse or production costs on the discs and cases themselves they would actually be saving money. Halo has sold 28.8 billion copies between Halo 2, Halo 3, and Halo Reach. Even if it only cost 1 penny to produce each disc and case that's 288 million dollars in manufacturing not counting man hours and overhead with a warehouse/factory cost/shipping etc etc etc.
I'm not sure the consumer would get the games for less money but the game makers would spend less money on making the games.

They might keep accessories like that because they honestly are cash cows. But on the game itself they can keep charging $59.99 and do away with the physical copies and still sell.
