At the ongoing WBO convention in Cartagena, Colombia, there was a suggestion to have a tournament with a series of welterweight eliminators between the top four contenders and the winner would get a shot at the current champion, Manny Pacquiao. The current top four contenders are Kell Brook, Mike Jones, Saul Alvarez and Vitaliy Demyanenko. Pacquiao is going up in weight to challenge Antonio Margarito for the vacant WBC title on November 13. He is expected to return to 147-pounds after the Margarito fight.

Alvarez has been fighting at 150-151-pounds in his last few appearances. It's not likely for him to be involved. Based on the current names being mentioned, it may not be likely for the winner to receive a direct fight with Pacquiao, who is going to be looking for the opportunities with the biggest financial benefit.

This won't happen, I guarantee you Mike Jones vs Kell Brook will happen next year for the vacant title.

First the IBF HW tournament, now the WBO

At least it the tournaments create more fights

Uhhhhhh.....none of the four names mentioned deserve a Pacquiao fight, nor are they in the top 5 of any true welterweight rankings. I agree they are up & comers, but they aren't in the class of Mosley, Mayweather, Margarito et al.

It's got nothing to do with deserving a shot at Pacquiao, he'll vacate the title after the Margarito fight.

I'd be happy to see Jones vs Brook for the title, it will help both men get on HBO.

That fight would get done w/out the meaningless strap
