After the victory, Griffin was set to battle Alfonso Sanchez live on Fox Sports for the WBO "8-round" light heavyweight championship (a title that was created by the organization solely for the winner of this show, as most title fights are 10 or 12 rounds in length), but the bout never materialized. Griffin did win this title against James Sundin in a non-televised fight.

| i actually read one time that the wbo was created as a split occured in the wba.
read this though this is hillarious
In 2001 the WBO was ridiculed after it admitted it had twice moved super-middleweight Darrin 'The Mongoose' Morris up its rankings despite the small matter of him being dead.
WBO president Francisco Varcarcel said at the time: "We obviously missed the fact that Darrin was dead. It is regrettable."
