If Margarito wins, is this one of the rare times a shot or past prime fighter wins a big fight?

Past their prime great fighters can still win "big" fights.
Ali beating Spinks Duran defeating Moore and Barkley Ray Robinson beating Basilio and Fulmer Joe Louis KOing Wlacott Mickey Walker beating Maxie Rosenbloom Ray Leonard over Hagler
But SHOT fighters I think by definition can't win "big" fights. Unless somehow they meet another shot fighter and the fight is somehow still big.
The idea that Morales, coming off a SD loss to MAB after six straight wins, was somehow shot when he beat Manny is just dead wrong.

I've read every post in this thread and I appreciate the information. All the so called shot fighters on here (Well most) are HOF fighters who honored the sport. Here we go again. Let's look at Marbles list of figthers who fit this description.
Ali beating Spinks Duran defeating Moore and Barkley Ray Robinson beating Basilio and Fulmer Joe Louis KOing Wlacott Mickey Walker beating Maxie Rosenbloom Ray Leonard over Hagler
Antonio Margarito over Manny Paqauiao. What's wrong with this picture?? I can't understand why intelligent people actually question whether Tony loaded his gloves against Cotto. I'm a long way from understanding that. The following things are more likely to happen than a Margarito victory.
1. A courtroom exists in America on this day. Not ONE lie is told for 24 hours.
2. A drug dealer has just been arrested for 6 kilos of cocaine. However, because of the location of the drugs, he has a chance to beat the rap. The dealer becomes a Christian on the spot and confesses to owning the cocaine.
3. The Democrats sweep the House and the Senate on Nov 2nd .
4. Wolfganster becomes a Rabbi in a very well known Synagogue.
5. Al Sharpton and Howard Stern start their own radio show.
6. Mike Tyson never sees the inside of a jail cell again.
7. On this 12th day of October, you can look at a magazine rack and not see a big rack of tits anywhere.
8. In the next 48 hrs., no member of Ninja will visit a porno site.
9. Ann Coulter endorses Prez Obama.
10. Someone will find the REAL killers.

It may simply show I'm not intelligent but here are some reasons for thinking Maragriuto's gloves weren't loaded for the Cotto fight.
1. Cotto suffered no unusual injuries for a guy in a long and grueling fight. 2. Margarito paraded around the ring in just his wraps shaking hands after the fight 3. Margarito practically waved his wraps in Kellerman's face after the fight.

Marble, you know I think you're the smartest guy on here and you're not going to give me a guilt complex with your last post. HBO did show the wrappings following the fight and a discolored object strongly suggested the wrappings contained some type of illegal wrapping. This is just coming off of the top of my head and I hope you don't take offense to this, since you know I have a tendency to think too much. However, is there a chance there's another fight that you're having issues with? Maybe someone you have great admiration for has a great victory that you question? Maybe you think this fighter loaded his gloves? If I'm wrong, I'm wrong.

How past his prime or "shot" is Margarito anyway? He sure didn't look that good against a no name opponent in his last fight, but how much can we tell?
After losing a highly competitive decision to PW, Margarito ends up destroying Golden Johnson, Cintron, and Cotto. I'm guessing this is his prime. Then he is upset by Mosley and caught attempting to use loaded gloves. In his next fight, after an over a year layoff, he looks mediocre against a fighter he was supposed to walk over.
Can we tell how past his prime Margarito is from this?
It's hard. I feel Pacboy is really stretching the limit when it comes to moving up in weight. Margarito is about Oscar's size and I don't see any reason why Margarito is as shot as Oscar. Oscar was having issues pulling the trigger all the way back during the Flod fight. Then he looked crappy against Forbes. In addition, against Pac Oscar killed himself trying to make a weight he hadn't made in nearly a decade.
Margarito used weight problems as one of his excuses against Mosley. With Pac's fight against Margarito, I don't think it will affect him that much sense he has fought at around 147 for most of his career. As the fight is at 152(?), weight shouldn't be that big of an issue, as Margarito has weighed in over that weight only 3 times in his career.
Margarito may be a scumbag and a dog, but he's a live dog. I wouldn't be surprised if Margarito gives Pac a lot of problems.

The only good thing about this fight is that after Margarito, Pacboy will have fought 3 fighters people were hollering Flod to fight for the past what... five years?
Just think it's kinda funny that a guy who says he's better than Robinson would let a little Asian guy do that.. "young chump" indeed.

I think the notion of loaded gloves is talked about WAY more than it ever happens and I can't think of a single fight in history other than the Collins fight where I really think it took place. I'm sure it did I just can't recall any fight that made me go Ah-haaaaa!
The thing I think people always forget is how often men are killed in the ring without any allegations of loaded gloves. We lose one every few months. Margarito hit Cotto 250 times and only a few of those were jabs. Yet Cotto came away with no serious injuries (at least none external or measurable on a catscan).
I'd love to know what fight or fighters you were thinking of though!

This premise presupposes Margo is inherently shot and I don't know if we can say that yet.

No. I think past his prime means "at less than his sutained best" whereas shot means "Is no longer competetive at the level he once was."

Cant say Tony's shot?
I think we can lean that way though - KO of Cotto where he took severe punishment for 6rds, KO victim of Mosley after 9 rds of punishment, rumors of struggling to make weight, and then looking nothing like the same fighter against a tomato can in May of this year

Semantics? How thin is the separation between less than optimum and usable?

This isn't remotely semantics. A fighter who was once a championship level fighter can be at less than his sutained best and still fight competitively and in some cases beat other championship level fighters. The fights are not mismatches. Shot fighters who were once as good now get dominated, drilled and KO'd by championship level fighters. They aren't competitive.
For your general font of information the gap between less than optimum and usebale is GIGANTIC! A brand new Ferrari is less than optimal because it requires gasoline whereas an optimal car wouldn't require fuel. A functioning AMC Pacer is useable.
