Croco-Mir possibly off?

According to major Croatian news portal Index.hr, Saturday’s UFC 119 headliner between Frank Mir and Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic could be in serious jeopardy. However, sources close to the bout say the report is without merit and that the bout will take place as planned.

"Cro cop is fine. Rumor is not true," UFC President Dana White posted to his Twitter account on Friday.

Croatia’s largest and one of its most accredited news sites states that the native kickboxer, who turned 36 a week ago, sustained a severe eye injury during his final sparring session on Friday. “Cro Cop” has been preparing for the Mir bout with regular training partners Igor Kolakusic, Ivan Hippolyte and Dean Lister in Zagreb, Croatia.

The Index.hr report also states that Filipovic had already consulted several eye specialists in his home country but was unable to obtain their clearance to fight. The popular knockout artist is scheduled to depart for Indianapolis this Sunday before squaring off against Mir on Sept. 25 at the Conseco Fieldhouse.

Nokaut.com, an MMA news site with strong ties to Filipovic, called the report false, and said it has training footage of the Croatian's final training session with no hint of an injury having transpired.

“Cro Cop” had only replaced fellow Pride Fighting Championships superstar Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira as Mir’s opponent a month ago.

Obviously it has been reported as unsubstantiated, but that would really, REALLY suck if it were true.

This PPV should be free anyway.

Cro Cop has had nothing but excuses from day one, I'd rather he dropped out instead of complaining about injuries after Mir outclasses him.

I'm really looking forward to Mir subbing CC so I hope this isn't true.

Dana said today that CroCop did get poked in the eye the last day of training and went to see some doctors but he's already on the way to Indy and the fight is on

CroCop: "I got hit in the eye, but nothing scary. This isn't the first nor the last punch like that. It won't stop me from traveling to fight, and to fight next Saturday against Frank Mir."

Come on though boobit, ever since this fight was made there has been rumors and whispers of injuries and a poor training camp, I'd prefer Mir to face a healthy CroCop.

I just read about this earlier, seems like there's a lot of conflicting reports on it, but just hope Mirko is unnaffected it by it if there is anything to the story.

Mirko might only need one eye though to outstrike Mir.

Dave Meltzer (subscription required) talked to Dana White about the Cro Cop situation:

Regarding Mirko Cro Cop, he was poked in the eye a few days ago in sparring and has blood in his eye, which looks bad. He said Cro Cop contacted the company immediately, and said his opthamologist cleared him for Saturday night's UFC 119 main event with Frank Mir.

He also said Cro Cop's doctor sent X-rays to the UFC showing no breaks and the doctors in Las Vegas who looked at the X-rays also felt Cro Cop would be able to fight, but White said as soon as Cro Cop lands in Indianapolis, he's going to be given a battery of eye tests.

As I posted earlier I was amazed at so many sites being willing to blithely post that the fight would go on based on the assessment of Cro Cop's camp and Dana White.

The only people who can say authoritatively whether or not Cro Cop will be able to fight Frank Mir this coming Saturday are the Indiana authorities and they won't even see Filipovic until tomorrow.

Anyone who followed the Ray Mercer situation at King of the Cage this weekend should know that it is not the fighters and promoters who decide which fighters are healthy enough to fight. Only the proper state authorities can make that determination. Until Indiana authorities examine Cro Cop and make their determination nothing is final. All we know is that Cro Cop WAS injured and that he and his doctors expect that he will be able to fight on Saturday.

Cross your fingers fight fans, UFC 119 NEEDS Mirko Cro Cop to be cleared to fight.

UPDATE: Cro Cop spoke to Fighters Only (HT BE member Horselover Fat):

"It was the very last minute of the very last round of the very last sparring," CroCop told Fighters Only staff writer John Joe O'Regan today. "We were sparring in UFC gloves and my sparring partner - who is about 120 kilos, Croatia's best thai boxer - he poked me in the eye. The pain was like... I cant even describe it, the pain was so big I thought he had blinded me.

"I went to see a doctor and he advised that the eye should be rested minimum two weeks. But I have made a commitment to the UFC and a commitment to the fans, so there is no question of backing out of the fight. I do not want to let anyone down, I know they could not find a replacement for me at this short notice and many fans have already bought tickets for the show."

CroCop is currently having to wear an eye-gauze and has a saline solution to use on the injured eye, which requires further examination but appears to have suffered a severe abrasion to the cornea. CroCop says his vision is "almost normal" from the eye and "I hope it could be back to normal in a week".

Move it to 120 or something, I love this matchup too much for it to not happen.

I agree, postpone the fight and make Lil Nog vs Bader the main event. It's not like the card doesn't have depth to fall back on, it's got Serra vs Lytle and Dunham vs Sherk.

Well I have heard people bitching about his card saying it is a weak card. I think it is a really solid card with or without Mir/Mirko. In fact these are usually my favorite cards, because everybody goes out there to prove something and they fight their asses off, versus the big name cards. UFC 115 was great and we knew we were getting an over-the-hill Iceman in the main event. Let us see the throwdowns!

this card is fight night level without Mir vs Cro Cop. They need that fight to happen.

If it were fight night level it would have a bunch of TUF winners who've done nothing otherwise and Nate. This is a numbered card either way. Just no title fight.

I really like this card. I want to see Serra-Lytle 2, Gulliard-Stephens, Sherk-Dunham, Bader-Nog, CC-Mir.

I am most excited about Serra vs Lytle, I hope to see another guido power knockout.
