Subject: Sergio Martinez vs Paul Williams rematch to be at a catch weight ? Wed Sep 15, 2010 10:06 pm
The long-awaited rematch between WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez and Paul "The Punisher" Williams should get finalized for November 20, according to sources who are close to the negotiations. The fight will take place in Atlantic City or Washington, D.C. HBO will televise the fight, along with the replay of Manny Pacquiao vs. Antonio Margarito, which takes place on November 13. Last December Williams won a twelve round majority decision over Martinez in a fight where both boxers went down in the first round.
The contracts have not been signed but sources inidcate "there are no outstanding deal points" and "everything has been hammered out and everything has been agreed to." There will be a catch-weight of 157-pounds. Williams last appeared in the junior middleweight division and wants to return at some point to the welterweight limit of 147-pounds. Martinez's last two bouts have been at middleweight.

In this particular case that weight limitation is odd. I mean neither guy has ever come close to busting 160. These two can make 157 in their sleep and 154 with only a modicum of effort.

Williams wants it because he still has delusions of returning to 147 for a big fight.
It doesn't make any difference, it's a comfortable weight for both men.
Hopefully Sergio gets some justice for the decision in the first fight and Williams' feet-dragging since then.

Weird decision to have it at 157lb, maybe Paul's team think the extra couple lb's will strain Sergio's 35 year old body.

See now this is what I don't get about Paul Williams. He claims he can fight across three divisions comfortably. Asking for a catchweight of 157 to me means that Paul is uncomfortable fighting guys who are allowed to fight at the max middleweight limit. I don't have a problem with the cathweight just don't call yourself the most avoided man and claim that youre comfortable fighting across three divisions.

I don't buy any of the "just needs to be signed" stuff anymore because of Flod/Pacboy.
Next: PW says "the negotiations never happened."

PW's maximum weigh in amount is 157. So he doesn't want Martinez above that. Stupid to me as Martinez weighs 159 for the 160 fights and making 157 won't affect him.
Dumb.

Catch Weights need to be banned. Either you're challenging for the 160 title, or you're not.

If it helps the fight get done, do it!

I'm guessing it's coming from the Williams side. The higher they go up in weight, the more advantages Sergio has because he's stronger. And Sergio has made comments that he's used to the added weight at 160.

If the weight is above 154, then you are challenging for the 160 title.

Williams has more of a frame to fill though. I would think Williams would have the advantage at 160, while Martinez would have it at 154, as far as weight is concerned.
