Anthony Mundine rediscovered his power with a tenth-round stoppage of a gallant Ryan Waters in their light middleweight WBA world title eliminator in Wollongong.
'The Man' withstood a strong early challenge from Waters at the WIN Entertainment Centre to move closer to his aim of winning a world title in a third division.
The win ended a run of nine bouts without a knockout for Mundine as he drops through weight divisions, with his last KO coming as a super middleweight in December 2007.
"I told ya, I'm only going to get stronger," Mundine said after the fight.
"I'm only going to get stronger by the will of god ... I worked hard for this fight and I got my weight down and I felt strong tonight."
While he was expected to easily account for Waters, Mundine wasn't able to stamp his authority until midway through the fight.
Despite giving away a significant height advantage to his opponent, Waters came out with plenty of aggression and intent to get in 'The Man's' face.
But ultimately, Mundine's superior speed and skill shone through and, after he landed several powerful blows late in the ninth round, it took him only 30 seconds of the 10th to finish the job with a TKO.
The win gives Mundine the right to challenge WBA light middleweight champion Miguel Cotto, though his next fight will be in December against former NRL player Garth Wood, who won the reality TV series The Contender.
Wood fought on the undercard, dropping Elvin Marbun in the first round.
Mundine said the bout would be his last before looking for fights overseas.
"There's a lot of fighters in Australia that want to fight me, Garth's earned his shot... but after Garth Woods I want to test the waters with the best, that's what I'm trying to do," he said.
Earlier, impressive Sydney fighter Billy 'The Kid' Dib proved much too classy for Filipino veteran Jack Asis, with a fourth-round stoppage in their lightweight bout.
Dib, the IBF's No.5 featherweight, landed a series of devastating body punches against Asis to improve his record to 29-1, 17 KOs.
Johannes Mwetupunga defended his Australian middleweight title with a unanimous decision win over a valiant Kurt Bahram.
He's trying to set up a fight with Miguel Cotto. How would he match up with him?

A lot of people do. I was just wondering what level everyone has him on. He's too good to be fighting in Australia.

I'm just not convinced he's really a world class guy at this point. He better get moving he's running out of years.
He's a lot bigger than Cotto and who the heck knows what Cotto is at 154. I still take Cotto.

He's a top 20 level supermiddleweight who will usually lose to the top elite fighters.
a supermiddleweight who melts himself down and challenges a guy who started at junior welterweight.
Mundine begged Green for 18 months to come out of retirement so they could have a big money rematch. The minute Green announces his comeback, Mundine says "I don't need Green" and starts dropping down in weight. That's the type of scum Mundine is.

nothing wrong with fighting in Australia as long as you have the local support. 99 percent of the boxing world are envious of Danny Green's drawing ability.

Mundine actually draws much higher than Green. Mundine didn't accept Green's challenge because Green would only fight him at Cruiserweight. Also, why should Mundine fight Green again? He destroyed him the first time.

Mundine looked like a twig tonight in his fight. When he was a Rugby League player he weighed 195 pounds.

Yeah but he's almost six feet tall and has several inches in reach as well.

I take Cotto all day long in that one. Mundine would be outclassed.

He's dropped too much weight. He just wants to be the first man in history to win 3 (those we don't speak off) in history in descending order.

Mundine cheered on the 9/11 attacks if I recall. Cotto would make him quit faster than a Gitmo interrogator.
The only good Aussie boxers (these days) are foreign transplants (Tszyu, Darchinyan, Bika)

He apologized and said it was just to get more heat on him. He shouldn't have said it anyways. He's like the Aussie version of Mayweather except not as good.
Tszyu is retired and Mundine is much better than Bika. Darchinyan, Mundine and Kastalidis are our best 3.

Bika > Mundine
Mundine would beat Bika easy.
You mean the same Mundine that lost to Manny Siaca? Mundine is a fugazzi. Bika would knock him into next year.

Bika would make Mundine his prison woman.
Remember this is a guy who was knocked out by feather fisted Sven Ottke, Bika has heavy hands and has the ability to drag world class fighters like Calzaghe into brawls.

You do know that fight happened in 2001 when Mundine had only been fighting for 18 months with no amatuer career. Honestly how many fights of Mundine have you watched in the past 5 years? He fought Green who punches heavier than Bika and Mundine won 10 of the 12 rounds.
