Never speak ill of the dead? WATCH ME!
The Argentine Victor Galindez was a fine fighter. He had defeated a series of high quality guys like Richie Kates and Yaqui Lopez and Pierre Fourie and Jesse Burnett. One of those guys who didn't do anything overwhelmingly well. He was a very good puncher, a very good defender, fought well on both his front and back foot and was a legitimate tough guy.
At the time of this fight Galindez is widely considered the best light heavy on the planet post Bob Foster. But immediately prior to this fight Galindez acted almost as badly as a fighter can act. He had lost his crown to New Jersey banger Mike Rossman on the undercard of the second Ali-Spinks fight. The rematch was scheduled for national TV in February of 1979. With the fight broadcast on live, and with Rossman IN THE RING, Galindez refused to leave the locker room because he didn't like the judges. The fight was cancelled. I despised the man from that point on. The Mr. Ronald Wright of the 1970's.
The fight finally came off two months later and Galindez wrecked Rossman in nine rounds to again become champion.
The hard punching Indianapolis southpaw Marvin Johnson had lost twice to HOFer Matthew Saad Muhammad and basically knocked everyone else out. Johnson had also beaten some fine fighters.
The two met in New Orleans in November 1979.
Near the end of the tenth round Marvin lands a left hand that rocks Galindez. Then early in the 11th BOOOOOOM!!!!!!!!!!!! The punch broke Galindez's jaw. JUSTICE!
Galindez fought once more, retired, and was killed shortly thereafter (he was 31) when he was run over during an automobile race in which he was participating.

There's something satisfying about seeing a bully getting his comeuppance.Always enjoyed watching Johnson fight.IIRC Spinks viciously kayoed him.
Thats why everyone loved it when Oscar destroyed Mayorga.

Oscar meted out a well deserved beating to Chavez as well.

Poor Vargas. He was so hung up on Oscar. I loved watching him get KO'd.

• I know I should be happy to see that Fernando Vargas is significantly less overweight than the last time I saw him, but if it indicates what I think it indicates, I’m anything but happy.
so true, I hope he doesn't come back to fight again. Rumors are Nando has financial issues.

One of my all time favorite punches was the left hook that Marcel Cerdan landed on Tony Zale. Zale was a pretty tough guy, but Cerdan made him fall forward with that punch.[i][u]

That sideburns into mustache thing that Marvin has needs to make a comeback, I call it the Goose Gossage. Facial hair was badass in the 70's.

Vargas has brain damage. It's obvious in his speech. The thing is, he was such an obnoxious punch, I don't think he is any worse off.
