| At Mr. Bird's request.
No strap bullspit. We are talking titles reigns as THE MAN! We'll do it two ways. In terms of defenses and in terms of years
HEAVYWEIGHTS-Mr. Joseph Louis Barrow. 12 years and 25 defenses.
CRUISERWEIGHTS-Carlos DeLeon had 7 defenses across three reigns. Nobody has had an extended reign across time.
LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT-Archie Moore was champion for about a decade. Darius M had fourteen defenses across six years. Bob Foster had a dozen title defenses in six years as champion.
SUPER MIDDLEWEIGHTS-Frankie Liles had seven defenses across five years.
MIDDLEWEIGHTS-Carlos Monzon had 14 defenses over seven years. Marvin Hagler had a dozen over seven years.
JUNIOR MIDDLEWEIGHTS-Koichi Wajima had seven defenses across three reigns.
WELTERWEIGHTS-Jose Napoles had fifteen defenses in two reigns over seven years. Henry Armstrong had 18 defenses jammed into TWO YEARS!!!!!!!!!
JUNIOR WELTERWEIGHTS-Julio Cesar Chavez had 13 defenses across two reigns over six years.
LIGHTWEIGHTS-Joe Gans had 15 defenses across two reigns over six years. Benny Leonard had eight defenses over 8 years and retired as champion. Joe Brown had eleven defenses over six years. Roberto Duran had ten defenses over seven years and left the division as champion. Carlos Ortiz had ten defenses over six years and two reigns.
SUPER FEATHERWEIGHTS-Brian Mitchell had 13 defenses over five years and retired as champion. Flash Elorde had 10 defenses over seven years.
FEATHERWEIGHTS-Abe Attell had 20 defenses over a decade.
JUNIOR FEATHERWEIGHTS-Bazooka Gomez had 17 defenses over four years. ALL KO's!
BANTAMWEIGHTS- Manuel Ortiz had 19 defenses in three reigns across eight years.
SUPER FLYWEIGHTS-Sung-Kil Moon had nine defenses across four years.
FLYWEIGHTS-Miguel Canto had 14 defenses over four years. ALL by decision! Jimmy Wilde was widely considered flyweight champion over seven years but only defended a handful of times.
108's-Saman Sorjaturong had ten defenses over five years.
105's-Ricardo Lopez had 22 defenses over nearly a decade.
Appreciate any corrections and comments.

At 122 he went 32-0-1 with 32 knockouts. Just silly.

But that fight was at 126, not 122. True.I just think Gomez ran out of challenges at 122 and made the four pound jump.

| Gomez was tailor made for a pinpoint puncher like Sanchez.Sal really seemed to dislike Gomez for some unexplainable reason. | |

| Thanks Marble. If I'm not mistaken, Wilfredo Gomez was 30 -0 at one point in his career with 30 KOs. He was ranked number 1 PFP before he suffered the loss to Sanchez. This is over guys like Leonard,Duran and Hearns. | |

Back then I don't think there were formal p4p rankings but I will say this. Bazooka was considered an absolute punching freak. A LOT of fighters build up gaudy KO records fighting mediocre talents and at the top levels wonder why their power doesn't stop people. Gomez just wrecked highly thought of challengers time after time after time.

The scary part is that Carlos Zarate's accomplishments kind of get overlooked when the subject of Gomez, Sanchez & Ortiz' title reigns comes up. If I recall correctly he had 50 or so KO's in his first 52 fights...held the Bantam title until he went up to challenge Bazooka. His only losses were to Fenech, Gomez, Zaragoza & Pintor. Gotta love the little guys.
