Promoter Frank Warren has revealed to the Herald Scotsman that Ricky Burns could be making the first defense of his WBO super featherweight title in a rematch with Alex Arthur, possibly at the Braehead Arena in the fall. Burns upset Roman Martinez for the title last Saturday in Glasgow. Warren would like to put the show together before Christmas. Arthur is one of only two fighters to beat Burns. He won a unanimous decision when they fought in February 2006.
“Alex Arthur is the sort of fight I would definitely consider. Why not? At this stage in his career Alex doesn’t want to be fighting eight- rounders, he needs to be fighting for titles,” said Warren.
“Alex is a fight I will definitely consider and when you add in the whole revenge thing and the fact that you have the all-Scottish angle with the east versus west aspect, then it is a great match. But Alex has been a champion and at this stage in his career he needs to be fighting for titles. We want Ricky to be back in action before Christmas to make his first defence so we will see what happens."
